Lehigh Secures Doubleheader Split Against Bucknell

LEWISBURG, Pa. – Lehigh baseball returned to Patriot League play on Saturday afternoon from Depew Field for two games against the Bucknell Bison. The Mountain Hawks dropped the opening game 2-1 but secured the doubleheader split with a 3-1 win in game two.
Earning the win and a save for Bucknell (14-20, 6-11 PL) in game one was starter Tyler O'Neill, who impressed with seven strikeouts in a complete seven-inning outing. Lehigh (19-14-1, 6-7 PL) starter Cole Leaman was credited with the loss after allowing only one earned run in 5.1 innings of action.
Neither team was able to get a run past home plate through the first two innings of game one, as both pitchers made quick work of their opposing lineup. The Bison finally broke through in the third inning courtesy of a Jacob Corson RBI single that scored Brady Karp for the game's first run. The following inning, Tyler Young connected on a single into left field, sending home Braydon Hubbard to tie the game at one apiece.
However, the tie would again be broken in the sixth inning. After putting a runner on base in scoring position, Leaman was replaced by Brandon Coughlin on the mound. Grant Voytovich, Bucknell's runner on second, advanced to third on a balk and advanced home on another balk one batter later to give the Bison a 2-1 lead. The Mountain Hawks couldn't respond in the following half inning, awarding the Bison a seven-inning game one win.
Marcus Danchision started on the mound for the Mountain Hawks in game two, tossing 7.0 innings with four strikeouts to earn his second win of the season. First-year Julio Ermigiotti tallied his second career save in relief while Bucknell relief pitcher Jonathan Adelmann was credited with the loss.
Game two appeared to be heading in a different direction from game one after the first innings, as both teams quickly scored to start things off. The Mountain Hawks struck first in the top of the frame off of a Ryan Cochran sac-fly followed by a Michael Trommer RBI single to set the score at 1-1 after the first.
Despite the fast start, neither team was able to score a run over the course of the next six innings. Lehigh stranded six runners on base while Bucknell left three aboard in that same time span. It wasn't until the eighth inning that more runs would come across home plate. With two outs on the board, an error from Voytovich, the Bison centerfielder, allowed Young and Cochran to score.
After earning the lead, Danchision was replaced by Ermigiotti needing six outs to secure the victory. The first-year made quick work of the Bison in the eighth, retiring them 1-2-3 in the frame. Things weren't as smooth for Ermigiotti in the bottom of the ninth, as Bucknell was able to load the bases with two outs on the board. However, Ermigiotti forced Chris Morabito to fly out to record the third out and seal the deal on Lehigh's sixth Patriot League win of the season.
The Mountain Hawks and Bison will meet again on Sunday at 12 p.m. in Lewisburg to decide the weekend's series.
