BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Riding a three-match winning streak, the Lehigh women's tennis team has built some confidence heading into the Patriot League Tournament, where the Mountain Hawks will open with a quarterfinal against Army West Point Friday at 1:30 p.m. in Lewisburg, Pa.
Lehigh enters the Patriot League Tournament as the No. 6 seed with an 8-10 overall record and a 3-4 league mark. The Mountain Hawks followed up wins over Bucknell and Saint Joseph's last week with a 7-0 shutout of Lafayette on Tuesday as Lehigh wrapped-up the regular season with its 18th straight rivalry win.
The Mountain Hawks have enjoyed pretty good consistency across their lineup, especially in the second half of the season. Lehigh used the same three doubles teams in all but one match this season. Junior Sibel Can and sophomore Paula Gonzalez will team at No. 1 doubles; sophomore Casey Zhong and freshman Elizabeth Nowak will play at No. 2 and senior Grace Lin and junior Leigh Friedman will compete at No. 3.
Lehigh's top team of Can and Gonzalez owns a 9-6 record at the No. 1 spot and went 4-1 during the Patriot League regular season.
Nowak is Lehigh's leader in singles wins, with an 11-5 mark, playing primarily at the No. 3 flight. She is 4-2 in Patriot League action and has won her last five singles matches.
The remainder of Lehigh's likely singles lineup for the Patriot League Tournament features Can and Gonzalez at the top two spots, Zhong at No. 4, Lin at No. 5 and sophomore Catherine Meighan at No. 6. Zhong is second on the team with eight singles victories, while Can and Gonzalez both have seven.
Lin is the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week and has won three straight singles matches.
Defending Patriot League Champion Army West Point earned the No. 3 seed in the Patriot League Tournament. The Black Knights are 19-7 overall and went 5-2 in the league with losses to Boston University and Navy. Army last played on April 17, beating St. Francis Brooklyn 5-2.
Lehigh and Army met on April 12 with the Black Knights claiming a 6-1 victory on the Ulrich Varsity Courts. Nowak earned Lehigh's point with a straight set win over Paola Bau at No. 3. Can and Gonzalez also posted a win at No. 1 doubles. Many of the singles matches were tightly contested with the top two singles flights both decided in three sets.
The Mountain Hawks are bidding for their first Patriot League championship in women's tennis. Lehigh has made the semifinals in each of the last two seasons and has advanced to the championship match just once, in 1999.
The Patriot League Tournament begins Thursday afternoon on Bucknell's Varsity Tennis Courts with the opening round match between No. 8 Lafayette and No. 9 Holy Cross. Lehigh and Army will play in the third quarterfinal on Friday, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Top seed Boston University will face the Lafayette-Holy Cross winner in Friday's first quarterfinal at 8:30 a.m. Bucknell will follow against Loyola in a 4-5 matchup at 11 a.m. The Lehigh-Army match will be followed by No. 2 Navy and No. 7 Colgate at 4 p.m.
Saturday's semifinals are set for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., with the Mountain Hawks playing in the 2 p.m. match against the Army-Loyola winner should Lehigh beat Colgate. The championship match is set for Sunday at noon.
