Mountain Hawks return to the water on Saturday for second spring competition

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following a strong effort against Loyola to open the spring, the Lehigh rowing team returns to the Schuylkill River this Saturday as the women compete against Temple while the men face Delaware. Racing begins at 11:50 a.m.

The Women's Varsity Eight and Second Varsity Eight highlighted last weekend's efforts, each winning their races by healthy margins. In the end, the performance against the Greyhounds set the tone for a strong spring.

"Last weekend, we raced with the effort that I've seen in practice," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "The effort is our focus. No matter how tired or great we are feeling, we're giving 100 percent of what we have."

With this past week being Spring Break at Lehigh, the Mountain Hawks took the opportunity to continue improving, bonding and growing as a team.

"The team spent several days practicing on Lake Nockamixon and staying in the cabins there," said Conley. "Being removed from campus and even internet really allowed our team to bond together by more personal interaction. The team was able to get a large amount of miles in, too, that reinforced the way we want to row."

On the forefront of the Mountain Hawks' minds are to continue improving by the day.

"We want to continue the momentum that we've developed," said Conley. "This will be a true test of toughness as Temple and Delaware are tough teams and we are coming off spring break. The goal is to raise the bar a little higher and race our race.  We can't control their speed, but we can control how we race

"The importance of finding more speed each week is what will make us successful at the Patriot League Championships and Dad Vail Regatta," said Conley. "It is a hard thing to do, but our team has been able to do it this week."

Following this Saturday's regatta, the Mountain Hawks will compete in the Murphy Cup next Saturday on the Schuylkill River.
