HISTORY
From the start of the women's athletics program in the mid 1970’s, the game fields for both women’s lacrosse and women's field hockey were located on what is now the Kaufman Fields. These fields currently serve as the primary practice fields for Lehigh's men's and women's soccer.
Originally these fields were underdeveloped, which limited the execution for sports like field hockey, which played on grass. With limited financial support for all women's sports at that time, improving these conditions took some time. In 1983, Rob Kaufman '68 made a gift that enabled the development of several improvements, including a new grass surface which became the game field for both women's field hockey and lacrosse. The area became known as Kaufman Fields and were dedicated on March 31, 1984.
The original softball complex located near Kaufman Fields was never a part of this gift. The Athletics department decided to name the softball field "Kaufman Field" after women's lacrosse and field hockey began playing their games at the new Ulrich Sports Complex in the late 1990's. When those game fields moved, and the space became a practice complex for soccer, the decision was made to give Rob visibility by naming the softball field for him.
The Lehigh softball team continued to play at Kaufman Field until midway through the 2015 season when they moved to the brand new Leadership Park. To keep Rob Kaufman's name and generosity visible, Lehigh references "Kaufman Fields" as the training home of Lehigh Soccer, and recognized Rob with a plaque at the new softball complex honoring his history of support for women's athletics.
EVENTS
Kaufman Fields host a wide variety of events throughout the year including:
- Lacrosse and soccer tournaments
- High school, amateur and other all-star events
- Numerous camps and clinics
