Mountain Hawks Return Home To Host Georgetown Saturday

10/28/2025 3:14:00 PM | Football

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – No. 7 Lehigh returns home for the first time since Oct. 4 to host Georgetown Saturday on Hawk-O-Ween: A Spooky Saturday at Goodman Stadium. The Mountain Hawks returned from their bye week with a 27-6 win at Fordham, a game that featured another strong showing by the Lehigh defense, while the offense generated a trio of rushing touchdowns. Lehigh totaled five sacks, with seniors Brycen Edwards and Tyler Ochojski both totaling 1.5. Sophomore quarterback Hayden Johnson threw for a career-high 267 yards. Georgetown moved to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the Patriot League with a 31-24 victory at Bucknell. Naiteitei Mose ran interception back 65 yards for a touchdown with 12 seconds remaining to secure the win for the Hoyas.

Quarterback Hayden Johnson turned things on late in the 2024 season. Johnson started Lehigh's final four games, including the playoff victory at Richmond. In his first career start, Johnson completed 16-of-21 passes for 204 yards with three touchdowns in a win against Colgate. He went on to complete 10-of-13 passes for 115 yards and a touchdown while rushing for 25 yards and a score to earn the Most Valuable Player award of Lehigh's 38-14 Patriot League title-clinching win over Lafayette in Rivalry 160. The Lancaster, Pa., native became the first first-year player to earn Rivalry game MVP honors since Lafayette's Drew Reed in 2013, and the first Lehigh player to accomplish the feat since Phil Stambaugh in 1996. Johnson completed 14-of-18 for 199 yards and two touchdowns in the playoff win against Richmond. For the season, Johnson completed 67 percent of his passes for 1372 yards and 10 touchdowns. He also rushed 70 times for 307 yards and four touchdowns. Johnson established a new career high with 267 passing yards in the win at Fordham and was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts. He is averaging 219.2 yards per game over Lehigh's last six games with 10 touchdown passes and zero interceptions during that time.

One of Lehigh's defensive strengths in recent years has been its ability to get to opposing quarterbacks. After finishing second in the Patriot League in sacks the previous three seasons, Lehigh led the league with 34 sacks in 2024 and ranked 19th nationally averaging 2.62 sacks per game. The Mountain Hawks had six sacks in home wins over Princeton and Fordham and totaled 20 during their six-game late-season winning streak. Defensive lineman Matt Spatny had a team-best 11.5 last season, including 3.5 in Lehigh's last two regular season games. Nose tackle TJ Burke finished with seven. Both Spatny and Burke were named first team All-Patriot League. After recording two sacks in its first three games, Lehigh totaled six in the win at Bucknell and matched that number at Columbia. Lehigh came out of the bye with a five-sack effort at Fordham. The Mountain Hawks lead the Patriot League with 26 sacks and rank fourth nationally, averaging 3.25 sacks per game. Senior Matt Spatny leads the team with 5.5, while classmates Tyler Ochojski and Brycen Edwards have 4.5 and 3.5, respectively. Twelve different players have at least half a sack for the Mountain Hawks so far this season.

Fredericksburg, Va., native Brycen Edwards must like facing the Richmond Spiders from his home state. Lehigh's senior linebacker set a then-career high with 12 tackles in last November's FCS playoff win in Richmond. In week one, Edwards spearheaded Lehigh's outstanding defensive effort against the Spiders, with a team-leading eight tackles, plus a tackle for loss and a key third down pass breakup. He added nine tackles in wins over Sacred Heart and Yale and has a team-best 65 tackles through eight games. Edwards established a new career high with 13 tackles at Fordham. He had two sacks at Columbia and has 3.5 over his last two games.

Georgetown comes to Goodman Stadium having won three consecutive games, including league victories over Colgate and Bucknell in the last two weeks. Last time out, the Hoyas won 31-24 at Bucknell behind a 65-yard interception return touchdown by Naiteitei Mose with just 12 seconds remaining. Dez Thomas II has taken over at quarterback for Georgetown and is completing 55 percent of his passes for 936 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions over eight games. He is also the Hoyas' second leading rusher with 282 yards and four rushing touchdowns. Savion Hart leads the Hoyas with 534 rushing yards. He also has eight rushing touchdowns. Linebacker GianCarlo Rufo is the top tackler with 76 stops including 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. Mose ranks third on the team with 36 tackles.

Lehigh and Georgetown meet for the 30th time with the Mountain Hawks leading the series 22-7.  Georgetown's double-overtime win in 2018 snapped a 17-game Lehigh winning streak in the series. The Brown and White met the Hoyas for the first time in 1901 and the teams did not meet between 1926 and 2001. Lehigh is 21-2 overall against Georgetown, since the Hoyas joined the Patriot League in 2001.

Lehigh is 21-2 against Georgetown since the Hoyas joined the Patriot League in 2001, and the Mountain Hawks have outscored the Hoyas by an average of 34.3-14.1 in those games. The Mountain Hawks are 10-1 against Georgetown at Goodman Stadium and 11-1 in Washington, D.C. over those 23 meetings. The Hoyas' lone win at Goodman Stadium came in the last meeting here in 2023. Lehigh won 17 straight games over Georgetown from 2001-2017 and had three shutouts during that streak (2002, 2007, 2009).
