Bullpen Delivers In Doubleheader Sweep Of Bucknell

4/7/2024 7:54:00 PM | Baseball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After dropping two closely-contested games in Saturday's home doubleheader against Navy, Lehigh baseball returned to J. David Walker Field for another pivotal Patriot League series against the Bucknell Bison. The Mountain Hawks swept the Bison in two hard-fought games to get back on track in league play.

"Our bullpen was outstanding today," said head coach Sean Leary. "Julio Ermigiotti and Brandon Coughlin both came into tough situations and worked out of jams, and then they gave us quality innings. David Andolina was equally impressive in his three-inning save."

The bullpen certainly was a focal point for Lehigh (18-12-1, 5-6 PL), as both winning pitchers on the day entered in relief. In game one it was Ermigiotti, who only allowed one run in 6.1 innings while striking out five Bucknell (12-19, 5-10 PL) batters in the process. Bucknell starter Jack O'Malley was credited with the loss after allowing the go-ahead run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

The first-year was called into action in the first inning after starter Jack Hamilton allowed three earned runs to cross the plate to begin the game. Ermigiotti proceeded to retire the Bison in order in each of the next two innings, all the while his offense produced a similar result. That would be until the bottom of the third when Rafe Perich's single plated Braydon Hubbard for Lehigh's first run.

The Bison added an additional insurance run in the top of the fourth, as Brady Karp singled home Nic Adamo to give Bucknell a 4-1 lead. However, Lehigh's offense came to life in the bottom of the frame, scoring four runs to take a 5-4 advantage. A bases-loaded hit by pitch followed by a Jake Whitlinger sac-fly made way for Hubbard's 2RBI single to give Lehigh the lead.

Ermigiotti continued to impress down the stretch, making quick work of the Bison in the fifth and sixth innings. Before the seventh and final inning of game one, the Mountain Hawks added an additional insurance run by way of another Perich RBI to put Lehigh ahead by two. Ermigiotti took care of Bucknell in four batters in the top of the seventh to seal the win.

In game two, it was Coughlin who came away with the win after conceding only one run while striking out four in 4.0 innings of relief. Bucknell's starter Mikey Myro picked up the loss after allowing the go-ahead runs in the fourth inning.

Najir Glenn started on the bump for Lehigh, and he managed to throw 2.0 innings for the Mountain Hawks. Glenn held the Bison scoreless in the first, which allowed for a bases-loaded hit by pitch and a Tyler Young sac-fly that gave Lehigh a 2-0 lead.

However, the Bison returned the favor in the second, scoring their first run of the game off of a Billy Kender RBI double followed by a three-run homer from Sean Keys that gave Bucknell a 4-2 lead. Coughlin entered in the third inning and proceeded to retire the Bison in four batters. This allowed a 2RBI single from Andrew Kohl in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at four apiece.

After another solid inning in the fourth from Coughlin, the Mountain Hawks continued to add to their lead. With two runners on base, Justin Butler attempted a bunt, but the throw from Bucknell's pitcher sailed over first base, allowing Perich and Whitlinger to score. The Bison responded the following inning with a Michael Trommer solo home run to cut Lehigh's lead to one.

Coughlin provided his team one more solid inning before being replaced by David Andolina in the seventh. Andolina was quickly faced with a jam after loading the bases with no outs on the board. However, a swinging strikeout, a fly-out and a groundout allowed the Mountain Hawks to escape the inning unscathed. Andolina then retired the side 1-2-3 in the eighth and took care of business in the top of the ninth to earn the save and the win for his team.

"I give credit to our offense today for scrapping to get on base all day," said Leary. "And Hubbard and Kohl came through with the big clutch hits."

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Tuesday, April 9 in the Liberty Bell Classic semifinals against Rider for a chance to play at Citizens Bank Park. Lehigh's next Patriot League series will again be against Bucknell on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14 for three games in Lewisburg.
