Mountain Hawks return to action against La Salle and Fairfield in Philly Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh rowing team continues its spring season on Saturday when it heads to Philadelphia to face La Salle and Fairfield on the Schuylkill River. The first two weekends of the Mountain Hawks' spring schedule have featured plenty of wind, cold and tough conditions, but they have fought through it to put forward some strong results.

Saturday's racing is expected to begin around 11 a.m.

Most recently, every Lehigh boat at the Murphy Cup qualified for a petite or grand final. Conditions are forecast to be much better this weekend, with Saturday's high in Philadelphia expected to be in the 70s and light winds.

"Finally, potentially having a race where conditions play less of a role than they have is exciting and almost a sense of relief at the same time," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "I do feel the previous two weekends have prepared the team to be able to adapt, but it will be great if the weather holds to really see how fast we can go in milder conditions.  The team has been crushing practices this week to find a level of consistency that they will need come championships."

Saturday is another opportunity to prepare for those championship races (Dad Vail Regatta and Patriot League Championship) come May.

"We have really been stressing with the team that we need to be able to repeat what we do in practice," said Conley. "That is goal number one this weekend. The second goal is to finally see what kind of speed we have in each boat and determine where are greatest strengths and weaknesses are so that we can focus in on those areas. I think no one knows where anyone else is in terms of true speed, so it will be interesting to watch and see.

Following Saturday's racing, the Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend. The women head to Annapolis on Saturday (Apr. 6) to face Navy and Georgetown. Then on Sunday, both the women and men compete at home on Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown – competing against rival Lafayette in the River Cup first, then facing Mercyhurst and Jefferson.
