BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Coming off a shortened spring opener vs. Loyola, the Lehigh rowing team will return to action at the Murphy Cup Saturday at the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Last weekend, Lehigh's Women's Varsity Eight picked up a convincing win, but the remaining races were cancelled due to the wind and rough conditions. Â
Â
"There is a definite sense of hunger that's been driving the team this week," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "They've focused on the things they can control and tried to be more consistent with our movements. This group hasn't been too overly anxious about the weekend. They really are taking one practice at a time and learning how to race in practice so that race day doesn't seem different."
Â
The Women's V8 finished with a time of 6:48.58, ahead of Loyola, a Patriot League opponent, by nearly 40 seconds (7:27.56).
"It was awesome to see the V8 race a great race through terrible conditions and feel great about their performance," said Conley. "It gave them a lot of confidence in their lineup, which can only bode well for us this weekend. "
Â
The Murphy Cup will bring a different format, with heats and finals, and a number of strong regional teams.Â
"Conditions are going to be a challenge again based on the forecast, so managing those off the water will be just as important as not letting them affect how we race on the water," said Conley. "The team needs to show how fast they can move the boat without regard to the other crews to see if they end up on top at the finish line."
Following Saturday's racing, the Mountain Hawks return to action next weekend when they face La Salle and Fairfield on Saturday, Mar. 30 on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
