Mountain Hawks edged 4-3 by C of C in spring break opener

CHARLESTON, S.C. – The Lehigh women's tennis team opened its spring break trip to South Carolina with a tightly-contested 4-3 loss to College of Charleston Sunday morning at the CofC Tennis Center at Patriots Point. The Mountain Hawks lost the doubles point, but stormed back with straight set wins at the bottom three singles flights. Lehigh led 3-2 but College of Charleston rallied to take the top two flights.
The Cougars improve to 6-5, while dropping Lehigh to 4-5.
"Today was a very close match," Lehigh head coach Sarah Hendrix said. "Lizzie Nowak, Casey Zhong, and Catie Meighan got three solid wins for us in singles, but collectively as a team, we didn't do enough to come out on top. We are looking forward to bouncing back tomorrow afternoon against Coastal Carolina."
College of Charleston swept the doubles flight with the tightest of the three matches coming at the top flight where junior Sibel Can and sophomore Paula Gonzalez fell 6-4 to Eva Nyikos and Christi Woodson.
Zhong got things started for Lehigh in singles play with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Clara Errard at the No. 5 flight. College of Charleston took a 2-1 lead with a win at No. 2, before Meighan won 6-3, 6-1 over Ava Turner at No. 6 and Nowak topped Catalina Medici 7-5, 6-2 at No. 4.
The top two singles flights both went three sets. The Cougars tied the match at 3-3 when Woodson held off Can at the top flight and got the clincher at No. 2 where Lily LaBiche rallied from a set down to beat Gonzalez.
Lehigh will next head to Conway, S.C. to battle Coastal Carolina Monday at 2 p.m.
