Â
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - After opening the spring season last weekend, the Lehigh rowing team returns to action on Saturday at the Murphy Cup. The Mountain Hawks enjoyed tremendous success at last season's Murphy Cup, highlighted by Madeleine Wescott and Carolyn Mazzie winning Gold in the Women's Varsity Pair. In total, four different boats reached the 2016 finals while the Women's Varsity Eight advanced to the petite finals.
Â
Last weekend, the Mountain Hawks faced Temple in the morning and Loyola in the afternoon. The men also faced Delaware in the afternoon race. The day was a tremendous opportunity for the Mountain Hawks to learn, and quickly apply what they learned in the afternoon.
Â
"Having the double dual meet was a way for us to apply what we learned from earlier racing," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "It was also nice to have it applied against a Patriot League foe as well. Â
Â
Highlighting last Saturday's spring opener was Lehigh sweeping the Varsity Eight, Second Varsity Eight and Varsity Four against Loyola.
Â
"Last weekend was great because we were able to get the first race jitters out of us," said Conley. "This weekend is about applying that composure to a bigger regatta and seeing how many times we can come down the race course. "
The Mountain Hawks have been hard at work in practice, looking to continue their improvement heading into Saturday's regatta.
Â
"I'm most happy about the changes the team has made in our culture off the water this week, and it's going to show in our long-term success, but even our practice has been sharp which is great to see," said Conley. "This has been a tough week. Â We had a lot to work on after the weekend. Â We had a lot of realizations and some moments where people had to step up, and that started to happen."
This weekend is another opportunity for the Mountain Hawks to learn about themselves.
Â
"This weekend is about seeing where we stand with nonleague and league teams," said Conley. "It will be a reality check, and at the same time, an opportunity for us to learn how to achieve at a large regatta where you have to perform in the morning if you want to race in the afternoon. Â I'm expecting some tough racing, but I'm looking for our team to show the effort I know they are capable of."
Â
Following Saturday's racing, Lehigh will look ahead to its first home race of the season when it hosts rival Lafayette in the River Cup on Saturday, Apr. 1. The regatta is slated for Lake Nockamixon in Quakertown, Pa.
