Mountain Hawks set to begin fall schedule at Navy Day Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Lehigh rowing team is set to begin its fall schedule on Saturday when the Mountain Hawks take part in Navy Day on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. Racing begins at 9:45 a.m. The race marks the first of four fall events over the next few weeks.
Â
Saturday's regatta is a head race, which features crews competing against the clock.
Â
"Racing against the clock can be more difficult than side-by-side as you have to channel those inner voices that tell you to stop when you have to keep going," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "Our goals for the week are simple. Gain as much race experience as possible and control what we can control. We want to be able to go from start to finish and say we didn't back off one stroke."
Â
The Mountain Hawks are excited for their first fall race. They have enjoyed a strong fall so far, which started off on a strong note due in large part to hard work over the summer.
Â
"I am excited about the fitness our team returned to campus with," said Conley. "We provided a weekly training plan to the team for the summer with the goal of returning to campus to participate in the VIA half marathon. Our entire returning team and recruited athletes participated and finished the run and accomplished something great. They have been transferring that base fitness to the water amazingly well too."
Â
The focus every fall is on fundamentals and building a strong base moving forward.
Â
"We have been focusing on making sure that whatever we do, we ask the question, 'Is this moving the boat faster?' As a team, we've been working on the dynamic of time to focus on rowing better and trusting the training when it's time to race," said Conley.
Â
Hard work has been a theme with the Mountain Hawks, and it's something Conley hopes to continue seeing all fall, which will set the team up for a strong spring. Â
Â
"This team is incredibly self-driven this year and it's exciting because we have freshmen stepping up and we have veterans empowering others," he said.
Â
After this weekend, Lehigh will head to the prestigious Head of the Charles next Saturday (Oct. 22).
