PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh opened up its five game road trip with a 2-0 loss to La Salle, Friday afternoon at Hank DeVincent Field. The Explorers scored twice within a three-minute span in the second half and held the Mountain Hawks without a shot on goal en route to their second straight victory. La Salle improves to 4-6 overall, while Lehigh suffers its second straight setback and falls to 3-5.
“In the end it came down to the fact that La Salle capitalized on its chances and we did not,” said Lehigh head coach Julie Mazer. “Jess (Miller) played well for us in the goal cage, but as a team we need to stay in the game mentally for the full 70 minutes.”
The Explorers took the lead four minutes into the second half as Kara Harpel netted her first goal of the season, off a scramble in front of the cage. Three minutes later, La Salle struck again, with this time Lindsay Fry scoring her second goal of the year to put the Explorers up 2-0.
Miller made six saves in the goal cage to keep the Mountain Hawks in the game. Lehigh mustered just three shots, two from junior Lindsey Smith and one from senior Kara Zweizig.
La Salle held a commanding 16-3 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in penalty corners.
The Mountain Hawks will return to the turf on Sunday when they travel to Villanova. Game time is set for 1 p.m. from Villanova Stadium.
