Mountain Hawks shut out by Cornell in Ithaca

ITHACA, N.Y. – For the second time in as many days Lehigh found itself tied at halftime and on Sunday it was Cornell netting a pair of second half tallies to defeat the Mountain Hawks 2-0 in a non-league matchup at Marsha Dodson Field. The Mountain Hawks again hung tough in the opening 35 minutes, but the Big Red controlled the major statistics, with a 20-3 advantage and a 10-1 edge in penalty corners.
Lehigh managed to go into halftime in a scoreless tie, despite being outshot 9-2 in the opening stanza. The Mountain Hawks defense did well to keep the Big Red off the scoreboard, as sophomore Lilia Stefaniwsky made four saves and sophomore Taryn Hartzell added her seventh defensive save of the season.
“Lilia (Stefaniwsky) played well for us in goal and our defense came out and played with more poise than we had shown in a while,” said head coach Julie Mazer. “Right now we’re working through our troubles on the offensive end, but we were better in the back and in the midfield today.”
Cornell broke through in the second half as Catie De Stio scored on a feed from Natalie Appleton at the 42:34 mark. The Big Red added a second goal fourteen minutes later when Abbi Horn, older sister of Lehigh sophomore Claire Horn, redirected Kate Thompson’s shot into the cage to make it 2-0.
Stefaniwsky finished with ten saves in her third start of the season. Melanie Jue was credited with one save to earn the shutout. Offensively, Lehigh mustered just two shots from junior Lindsey Smith and one from Hartzell.
The loss is the fifth straight for Lehigh, which is now 3-8 on the season. Cornell improves to 6-4 with the win.
The Mountain Hawks return to the turf, and Patriot League play next weekend when they wrap up their five game road trip at Bucknell. Game time is set for 2 p.m. from Lewisburg, Pa.
