Lehigh drops Patriot League opener

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh (3-5, 0-1) dropped its Patriot League opener to Colgate on Saturday by a score of 1-0 at the Ulrich Sports Complex. The Mountain Hawks fought to the end and had numerous scoring opportunities, but could not find the back of the net.
Sophomore Mary Beth Kuenne led Lehigh with four shots, followed by freshman Kelsey Smith and junior Sheila Clabby with two apiece. The Mountain Hawks had eight corners in the game compared to Colgate’s four.
The Raiders (3-2, 2-1) goal came off of a corner at the 7:54 mark of the first half when sophomore Sarah McCarthy found the back of the net. That was the last time Colgate really challenged Lehigh, as the Mountain Hawk defense picked up its intensity from that point on.
Junior Jeanine Hoff and sophomore Meghan Gove split halves in the cage with Hoff picking up two saves and Hoff turning back two shots of her own on the afternoon. The Mountain Hawks were aggressive throughout, and unleashed a plethora of shots, particularly towards the end of the game, out shooting the Raiders 12 to 5 for the contest.
Head coach Julie Mazer stressed that her team needs to finish better in order to give the Mountain Hawks a better chance to win. "I thought that was the most aggressive we’ve been in a game all season. We just need to the put the ball in the cage." Mazer adds, "We stayed with them throughout the entire game and had several chances, but did not take advantage."
Lehigh returns to action on Friday when the Mountain Hawks travel to New York to take on Columbia. Game time is set for 7:00.
