HAVERFORD, Pa. - Lehigh's men's cross country team competed at the Haverford Invitational on Friday evening. The Mountain Hawks won the meet, scoring 33 points. They edged out Saint Joseph's, who finished second with a score of 39.
Lehigh was championed by senior Alex Heidemann and junior Thomas Smigo, who placed fifth and sixth. They both crossed the finish at about the same time, finishing in 20:18.6 and 20:18.8, respectively. After the two upperclassmen came first-year Miles Brekhus. He finished not far behind the two in ninth place, and ran 20:35.1.
The fourth and fifth finishers for Lehigh were junior Noah Zahn and first-year Ryan Macom. Like the leading duo, they finished at the same time. It was the elder Zahn (20:51.4) who out-leaned the younger Macom (20:51.9) to place 11th ahead of Macom's 12th.
First-years Sawyer Macy and Garrett Hyneman rounded out the scorers for the Mountain Hawks. In their second ever collegiate races, Macy finished 15th (21:07.1) and Hyneman placed 23rd (21:36.5). The eighth and final Lehigh runner to cross the finish line was Thomas Arnold. The senior ran 21:46.8 to place 24th.
"Smigo and Heidemann did a great job working together out front and making some confident mid-race moves," head coach Debbie Utesch praised. "A lot of first-year men competed and followed their lead, and we moved ahead of Saint Joe's for the win over the last half mile."
The Mountain Hawks now shift focus to the Patriot League Championships. They will be held on Friday, October 31 at home on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course.
