BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Following an extended layoff, the Lehigh rowing team heads to Philadelphia this weekend for the prestigious Dad Vail Regatta. The two-day (Friday-Saturday) regatta is the largest intercollegiate rowing event in the United States.
Â
The Mountain Hawks were last in action on Apr. 18 at the Kerr Cup where three crews advanced to the grand finals.
Â
"The team mixed it up a lot over these last few weeks with mixed line-ups, a large amount of tough miles and getting ourselves prepared," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "While we are heading into final exams, we have taken a proactive stance on studying ahead to minimize stress for our competition."
Â
Last season, the Men's and Women's Varsity Eights and Men's Freshmen Eight all advanced to the semifinals at the Dad Vail Regatta. Two years ago, the Women's Freshmen Eight took bronze at Dad Vails.
Â
"Dad Vails is the largest collegiate race in the country and holds a lot of tradition for the team," said Conley. "We have seen a lot of our crews rise to a new level each year at this regatta. The team has really come a long way this season in learning and developing its understanding of what it takes to be competitive at this level."
Â
One challenge heading into the weekend is balancing rowing with final exams, which began on Tuesday at Lehigh. The Mountain Hawks are looking to turn a potential negative into a positive.
Â
"Having such a big race during final exams is never easy, but it is also a tremendous way to push ourselves to learn," said Conley. "While rowing may not be a class, it is another means to learn about life after college. If our athletes can learn how to manage the stresses of exams and race at a high level, it means that our student-athletes are that much more ready to handle the high-pressure life after college."
Â
Hopes are high for the weekend ahead and it began with the preparation and hard work the Mountain Hawks have put in over the entire year.
Â
"Our first goal is race our best and the only way we're going to accomplish that is preparation, focusing on one stroke at a time and being resilient to anything thrown at us during the regatta," said Conley.
Â
Racing begins early in the morning Friday. Please check the Dad Vail Regatta website for more information and details as they become available.
Â
Following this weekend, the women's team will wrap up its season at the Patriot League Championships next Friday on the Cooper River in Camden, New Jersey.
