Improves league record to 2 wins, 1 loss
The ice hockey team beats Temple 8 to 7 in a crazy game that included an empty net goal that turned out to be the game winner.
Lehigh scored off the opening faceoff as Kevin McGee found himself on a 2 on 1 break with Henry Brooks. McGee waited until the right time to throw a pass under the defenseman's stick to Brooks who emphatically buried the puck into the net. Midway through the period, Jake Homan fed a nice pass through the neutral zone to Chris Ramondelli skating the blue line. Ramondelli was able to turn the defenseman and slide the puck between the pads of the goalie to give Lehigh a 2-0 lead. Temple made it 2 to 1 with a high slot shot that hit the inside of the post and went in on goaltender Patrick Walgren. Temple went on the power play and scored to tie the game. With over a minute to go in the period, Temple went on the power play again and was able to score with seconds left to go into the locker room ahead 3-2.
On the first shift of the second period, Lehigh takes a penalty and goes shorthanded for the fourth time in the game. Temple scores to make the game 4-2. That's 3 power play goals on 4 opportunities. Temple extends the lead to 5-2 midway through the period. At six minutes left in the second period, Evan Goldstein wins a faceoff in the right offensive circle back to Andrew Clayton who shoots on net. Adam Goldstein was able to redirect the shot past the Temple goalie to make the score 5-3.
The third period started with McGee taking a pass from Ramondelli, then getting a turn on the defenseman and beating the goalie with a shot to the far post. On the ensuing faceoff, McGee won the puck to Brooks who tapped it back to Clayton. Clayton went D to D to his partner Stephen Flego who passed the puck up the left side to Ramondelli. Ramondelli hit McGee with a pass through the middle where McGee avoided a check and went forehand to backhand to get it up over the goalie for his second goal in 11 seconds, which tied the game. At the 10 minute mark, Flego dumps the puck to the corner which is handled by McGee. McGee cycles the puck with Brooks who walks out from behind the net to an open side and slides the puck under the goalie to give Lehigh a 6-5 lead. Temple answered two minutes later to tie the score at 6-6.
With 6 minutes to go in the game, Ramondelli finds McGee in the high slot. McGee's first shot is blocked, the puck comes back to him and he takes another shot. The rebound comes out to Brooks waiting at the side of the net and he left no doubt as he scored to take the lead back, 7-6.
With a 1 minute to go, Temple pulls their goalie leaving an empty net. McGee intercepts a pass at center ice and feeds the puck to Eric DelGizzo who shoots the puck into the empty net to make the score 8-6. Hold on, it's not over yet! Temple calls timeout. Temple wins the faceoff and enters the zone. The puck is dropped back to a defenseman and goalie, Patrick Walgren makes a great glove save. Lehigh wins the faceoff at the right circle but fails to get a clearing pass through. There is a scrum in front. The puck pops out to a Lehigh player who skates up ice and inexplicably ices the puck. Temple wins the next faceoff back to the point. The shot goes through a mesh of bodies in front and finds the back of the net to make the score 8-7 with 17 seconds left. Off the center ice faceoff, the puck finds it way deep in Lehigh's zone. Three Lehigh players trap the puck in their skates and wait out the remaining time for the win.
It was a great league win for the team which is now 3 and 6 overall and 2 and 1 in the league. With their weekend efforts, Chris Ramondelli and Kevin McGee are first and second in the country in scoring in the ACHA. That is quite an accomplishment.
