Lehigh hosts Lafayette in River Cup Saturday

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Looking to ride momentum from success last week, the Lehigh rowing team faces Lafayette in the annual River Cup on Saturday. Racing begins at 9 a.m. on the Lehigh River in Allentown. The Mountain Hawks won all but two races against Lafayette last year, including both Varsity Eight boats, to keep the men's, women's and overall River Cups at Lehigh.
With facing Lafayette, there is obvious excitement.
"The team is excited, but we're approaching it like we would any other race," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "Our goal as we've stated is to have our best race to date.
"The rivalry is special because it's our link to the past, present and future of our program and the rest of the athletic department," Conley continued. "To have a link like that across all sports helps everyone feel a part of something special."
Last weekend, the Mountain Hawks rowed in the Murphy Cup on Saturday and followed that up by competing in the Iona Invitational Sunday.
"Last week's tough race schedule will truly help the team understand how tired they will be when they make it to a final and still have to push through," said Conley. "It really helped the team understand how to be a little tougher in those situations."
Lehigh's Women's Varsity Eight, Men's Freshmen Eight, Men's Freshmen Four and Women's Second Varsity Eight all finished first in a race on Sunday.
"We have had some strong practices and races this year and we have to continue to execute like we have been. We need to keep staying in our boat and not worrying about another crew or other distractions," said Conley. "Our expectation is to simply be faster than yesterday as an entire team. We have the motto this year of 'one team, one drive' so putting emphasis on everyone is valuable to this team and pushing as one, both on the oar and in everything we do. I feel like we raised the bar significantly this year and we have to keep raising it."
Following Saturday's racing, Lehigh will return to action in two weeks at the Kerr Cup on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
