BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Coming off another strong performance against Lafayette to win the River Cup, the Lehigh rowing team will return to action for the first time in two weeks when it competes in the Kerr Cup on Saturday. The regatta will take place on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia. The Mountain Hawks look to continue their improvement leading into the Dad Vail Regatta and Patriot League Championships in May.
Having a week off from competition helped the Mountain Hawks in several areas.
"The time off allowed us to reevaluate a few of our lineups and give some athletes opportunities to move up into better boats without the pressure of having to prep for a race," said Lehigh head coach Brian Conley. "Also, I think the timing of taking the past weekend off ended up being very fortunate for us as we had a lot of illness go through the team and it allowed them the time to recuperate and rest properly to hopefully put together a good set of races for this weekend."
The Mountain Hawks were coming off three different race days in an eight-day stretch: Murphy Cup (Mar. 29), Iona Invitational (Mar. 30) and River Cup (Apr. 5).
In the River Cup, Lehigh won all but two races against its archrival to claim the men's, women's and overall trophies for another year. That included wins by both Varsity Eight boats to set the tone for a successful day.
"All of the previous races have helped us carry some good momentum through practices and bringing home the River Cup really set us up nicely to push through a solid week of practice without the excitement of a race," said Conley. "We are really focused on taking on stronger teams each weekend and trying to keep moving up the rankings inside and outside the Patriot League."
The Kerr Cup is one of several new regattas on the slate this year.
"We put a number of new races on the schedule this year to help the athletes learn to race more effectively in different settings, surroundings and against different competition," said Conley. "We are hoping that we can show some speed that will set us up nicely for our upcoming championship regattas."
The goal is to prepare for the ultimate races, the Dad Vail Regatta (May 9-10) and Patriot League Championships (May 16).
"I think we're in the best spot that we have been in the last four years," said Conley. "We have talked about how this year was started four years ago with the seniors and that it's the job of the underclassmen to continually make each year successively better and our seniors have definitely done that in their time here. I am excited to see them have their best season here at Lehigh and graduate knowing that they really made an impact on the program."
The Mountain Hawks will return to action next weekend when they travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to face Colgate and Hamilton University on Apr. 26.
