BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team looks to remain undefeated in Patriot League play Wednesday evening when the Mountain Hawks travel to Easton to face archrival Lafayette. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and the contest can be viewed for free on the Patriot League Network.
"Secondary to the rivalry, we just have to focus on competing against Lafayette," said head coach Dean Koski. "It's an important Patriot League matchup for us. We have great respect for the rivalry and our team is keenly aware of the rivalry.
"Our focus is on how to beat Lafayette as a soccer team," continued Koski. "They're a good team and they'll be well prepared. We know we're on the road so we just have to execute the things that we do well and match their energy and intensity."
Lehigh is 2-0-0 in the Patriot League for the first time since 2006 and carries a 6-3-0 overall record into Wednesday night's matchup. The Mountain Hawks are coming off a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Bucknell Saturday night in Lewisburg. Lehigh trailed 1-0 for nearly 70 minutes, but Freshman Doyle Tuvesson scored an equalizer in the 73rd minute before a free kick from Jamie Luchini in the 89th minute secured a 2-1 victory. Tuvesson earned his second Patriot League Rookie of the Week honor of the season for his efforts in the victory. Prior to Saturday's win at Bucknell, the Mountain Hawks earned a 2-1 victory over then 14th-ranked American to kick off league play on Sept. 27.
Luchini leads the squad offensively with ten points behind four goals and a pair of assists. Tuvesson follows with three goals and an assist, good for seven points. Juniors Brian Vail and Austin Decker, along with senior Ali Famili, have also scored goals for Lehigh this season. The defense has been strongly anchored by Vail and sophomore Justin Worley. In goal, senior keeper Ciaran Nugent has tallied a league-leading 4.25 saves per game average to go along with a 0.810 save percentage.
Lafayette will be in search of its first Patriot League win Wednesday night as the Leopards hold an 0-2-0 mark in the league to go along with a 3-5-2 overall record. Lafayette opened league play with a 2-1 double-overtime loss to Colgate before falling 1-0 at Navy last Saturday. The Leopards' three wins have all been by a score of 1-0 and have come over Saint Peter's, Binghamton and Albany.
Greg Biggiani and Ryan Egan lead Lafaytte with two goals apiece, while Eric West and Christian Moyse have each scored one. Sandy Leavy has seen all of the time in goal this season, making 33 saves and owning a .767 save percentage and 0.92 GAA.
Lehigh holds a 54-46-10 all-time advantage over the Leopards, but Lafayette has won the last three meetings, all by a score of 1-0. A penalty kick goal by Lafayette's Peter Adubato in the 35th minute proved to be the game winner in last season's meeting at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
Following Wednesday's matchup, Lehigh returns home Saturday to host Boston University at the Ulrich Sports Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. and free video of the game can be viewed on the Patriot League Network.
