ITHACA, N.Y. – Junior Stacey Reich won two matches to reach the semifinals at flight C singles to lead the Lehigh contingent at the Cornell Fall Invitational at the Reis Tennis Center. Reich was one of six Mountain Hawks to see action, and one of just two to pick up victories in the three-day event which served as the opening tournament on Lehigh’s fall slate.
Reich posted a 2-1 record in three matches, with all three of her matches going the full three sets. In each of her first two matches, Reich dropped the first set but rebounded to win the next two. In the opening round, Reich rallied to defeat Kamila Sherlin of Binghamton 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, then in the quarterfinals, she battled back to beat Julie Loomis of Cornell 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. Reich won the first set of her semifinal match with Theresa Strangl 7-5, but ended up dropping the next two tightly-contested sets 6-7 and 5-7.
Senior Victoria Vityuk was the only other Mountain Hawk to earn a victory on the weekend, as she won her opening round match over St. Bonaventure’s Vanessa Rumpel 6-2, 6-1 at flight C singles. Vityuk was ousted in the quarterfinals by Emma Leibowicz of Binghamton 6-1, 6-2.
Also competing for the Brown and White where seniors Allie Schwartz and Ariela Cohen at flight A singles and senior Ruthie Furman and freshman Liz Piscitelli at flight B singles.
Lehigh’s doubles teams failed to win a match on the weekend, with Schwartz and Cohen and Furman and Piscitelli combining at flight A and Reich and Vityuk teaming at flight B.
The Mountain Hawks will continue the fall season next weekend at the ITA/Eastern Championships hosted by Army at West Point, N.Y.
