ITHACA, N.Y. – Lehigh opened its fall tennis season this weekend competing in the Cornell Fall Invite at the Reis Tennis Center. All seven Mountain Hawks saw valuable match action throughout the three day event and despite the fact that no Lehigh player advanced past the quarterfinals in the championship bracket, five Mountain Hawks won singles matches and sophomore Victoria Vityuk won the consolation bracket in flight D singles.

In doubles play, Lehigh’s top three teams won their opening match before bowing out in the quarterfinals. Sophomore Alexis Jacobi teamed with senior Francesca Murasko-Blank and senior Gwen Dwyer played alongside sophomore Ariela Cohen in flight A. Sophomore Allie Schwartz teamed with freshman Julie Arthofer to go 1-1 in flight B.

In flight A singles, Dwyer opened with an impressive 6-1, 6-0 win over Megan Gurek of Marist, before bowing out to eventual champion Andreea Novaceanu of Buffalo in the quarters. On the other half of the bracket, Cohen needed a tiebreaker to get past Vanja Lakic of Niagara before falling to Kasia Preneta of Cornell.

Jacobi and Schwartz represented Lehigh in flight B. Schwartz rebounded from a loss in the first round to win a consolation match versus Julianne Prokopich of Niagara. Jacobi dropped both of her matches in the event.

In flight C, Arthofer won her first singles match, taking out Jacqueline Cary of Niagara 6-0, 6-3, before losing to Katrin Fischer of Buffalo. Murasko-Blank dropped her opening match to eventual champ Smaranda Stan of Buffalo, and then lost a consolation match to Cameron Williams of Colgate.

Vityuk was the only Mountain Hawk to earn two singles wins. After dropping her first match to Christine Limsiaco of Army, Vityuk defeated both Kim Roberts of Niagara and Katie Houghton of Army in straight sets to take the consolation crown.

The Mountain Hawks will return to the courts next weekend when they travel to Newport, R.I. for the ECAC Championships, running Friday through Sunday.
