Sue Troyan officially assumed her new role as Deputy Director of Athletics in the summer of 2022. Troyan made the transition into senior administration following a stellar 32-year career as a head coach at Lehigh, the last 27 which were spent leading the women's basketball program.
In her new role, Troyan will advise the Dean of Athletics and engage in oversight of a number of key areas of department operations including personnel, resource allocation priorities, evaluative processes, operational and performance effectiveness, planning and prioritization and staff development needs and priorities.
Troyan will also assume oversight of human resource functions for the athletics department and will provide leadership for a number of the department’s key initiatives related to the department’s priorities, including continued leadership of the department’s ongoing commitment to diversity, inclusion and equity, where she currently chairs Lehigh’s D.I.E.A.R. Advisory Council.Â
In 27 seasons as Lehigh’s head women’s basketball coach, Troyan amassed a 430-361 overall record and a 218-178 Patriot League mark. She guided the Mountain Hawks to four Patriot League Tournament championships (1997, 2009, 2010, 2021) and four NCAA Tournament appearances during her tenure.
Under Troyan's guidance, Lehigh grew into one of the Patriot League's upper-echelon programs. In addition to their four Patriot League titles, the Mountain Hawks made six championship game appearances and reached the semifinal round in 10 of the last 15 league tournaments. Lehigh added a fifth postseason appearance under Troyan as the 2010-11 squad qualified for the WNIT.
Â
On an individual level, Troyan mentored 45 All-Patriot League honorees and seven Patriot League major award winners. Four student-athletes were recognized as Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year, most recently Mackenzie Kramer in 2022.
From 1991-1995, Troyan also served as Lehigh's head softball coach, posting a 126-90-1 career record and guiding the Brown and White to three consecutive Patriot League titles on the diamond from 1993-1995 before handing the program over to her husband Fran, who has led the Mountain Hawks to 12 titles in 27 seasons.
Prior to taking over as women's basketball head coach prior to the 1995-96 season, Troyan served for five years as an assistant basketball coach and two years as the Director of Athletic Program Budgets. She initially began at Lehigh as a graduate assistant before becoming Lehigh's first-ever full-time assistant coach.
Â
A 1988 graduate of Dickinson College, Troyan received her B.A. in Economics. She received her M.B.A. from Lehigh in 1991.
Â
At Dickinson, Troyan was a four-year athlete in both basketball and track. On the court, Troyan was voted the team’s most valuable player following the 1988 season. She was named to the Middle Atlantic Conference First Team and Second Team All-ECAC in her senior season. Troyan was a three-time All-American in track.
Â
Sue and her husband Fran – Lehigh’s head softball coach – reside in Saucon Valley, Pa. with their daughter Katie ‘16, and sons David ‘20 and Matthew ‘21.
