    Assistant Coach

2025 marks Casey Howshall's first season as an assistant coach and second overall with the Lehigh rowing program.

Howshall transitions into his new role after serving as a volunteer assistant with the Mountain Hawks during the 2024-25 campaign. In that role, he worked closely with athletes across all levels of the program, providing technical instruction, form corrections, and support in training and competition. He also assisted with program logistics and alumni engagement.

In addition to his experience at Lehigh, Howshall has held a variety of coaching positions throughout the Philadelphia region. He served as an assistant coach at Conestoga High School, where he contributed to the varsity program and later co-led the novice squad to a successful spring racing season culminating in national competition. He also spent multiple summers coaching at Crescent Boat Club, including as head coach of the women’s rowing program and of a masters training group. His coaching résumé also includes several years working with novice and youth rowers, developing training plans and introducing athletes to the sport.

A decorated rower in his own right, Howshall has represented the United States on the international stage. He competed for the U.S. Senior National Team in the men’s lightweight quad in both 2023 and 2024, earning a silver medal at the 2024 World Championships. He also raced with the U23 National Team in 2016 and 2017. At the high-performance level, he trained with elite squads in Boston from 2018–2024, highlighted by a fourth-place finish at the 2024 Olympic Trials and a gold medal at the 2023 World Championship Trials in the lightweight quad.

Howshall rowed collegiately for the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a four-year member of the lightweight team. His career included a fifth-place finish in the lightweight four at the 2017 IRA Regatta and a gold medal in the lightweight freshman eight at the 2014 EARC Sprints. A three-time IRA All-Academic honoree, he also earned Penn’s Student-Athlete Impact Award in 2017.

A Philadelphia native, Howshall graduated magna cum laude from Penn with a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry and a minor in Psychology. He went on to earn his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Boston College, where he also received the Donald J. White Award for Excellence in Teaching.
