BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh women's tennis secured its first league win of the season with a dominant 6-1 victory over Loyola on Sunday morning at the Ulrich Varsity Tennis Courts. The Mountain Hawks improved to 8-5 (1-2 PL), while the Greyhounds fell to 10-4 (2-4 PL).
"Winning the doubles point was huge for us today—it gave us momentum and set the tone for singles," said head coach Sophia Geier. "I'm really proud of the way we competed, especially our mental toughness. Winning four third sets shows how resilient and determined we were in the tough moments. It was a great effort from start to finish."
Lehigh started strong in doubles play, with Audrey Harrington and Hamsa Javagal getting things rolling with a 6-2 victory at the No. 3 doubles spot. Ronit Khromchenko and Alina Shyani clinched the first point for the Mountain Hawks with a 6-4 win at No. 2 doubles.
Shyani carried her momentum into singles play, claiming the first point for Lehigh at the No. 3 singles spot with a 6-3 win in both sets. Loyola responded with their first point, narrowing the score to 2-1 after Allyce Gaborik fell 6-4 in both sets at the No. 6 singles spot.
Maggie Forkner dropped her first set 6-3 at No. 1 singles, but battled back to win the next two sets 6-3, 6-3, securing the point for Lehigh. Javagal followed suit, securing the team victory at No. 2 singles. After winning her first set 6-2, she dropped the second set 6-2 before clinching the win 7-5 in the third set.
Khromchenko also triumphed in three sets, recovering from a 3-7 loss in the first set to win 7-5, 6-0 in the final two sets. Giselle Vlassis completed Lehigh's streak of four consecutive three-set victories, first winning 6-3, then dropping the second set 3-6, before closing out a 6-4 win in the third set.
Next up, Lehigh will play at Bucknell on April 4 at 1 p.m.
