BETHLEHEM Pa. - Lehigh women's swimming and diving hosted Patriot League rival Colgate on Friday night. The Mountain Hawks held off the Raiders, beating them 135-105 for their third straight win.
The most effective swimmer for Lehigh was senior Mairin Ludwig, who won two events in the competition. She got her first win of the night in the 200-yard freestyle, where she finished in 1:52.62. Ludwig also got a freestyle win over 500 yards, where she gapped the rest of the field by 7.5 seconds, hitting the wall at 5:03.65. Ludwig also finished second in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:07.87 just one second off of first place.
First years Eliza Johnson and Genevieve Cody continued their undefeated start in their main events. Johnson kept her winning streak alive in the 200-yard backstroke, swimming 2:04.57. Cody took the win in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing in 24.35. She was only one hundredths of a second away from a second freestyle win over 100 yards, but Cody's 52.35-second race was good for second.
Lehigh had a handful of second-place finishes over other individual swimming events. Sophomore Claire Coughlin in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:52.61), senior Caitlin Deitch in the 200-yard freestyle (2:06.83), and first-year Emma Gyorkos in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:26.29) all secured silver-medals.
Junior Katie Whitaker once again dominated on the diving board. In the three-meter dive, she won with a score of 259.05, her seventh victory of the season. Whitaker finished second in the one-meter dive, her score of 230.55 being only six points short of another title.
The Mountain Hawks were able to continue winning in the relay events. Lehigh won the 400-yard medley relay in 3:54.81, with the team consisting of Johnson, Deitch, Cody, and sophomore Clara Moschella. The squad of Johnson, first-year Giselle Michaels, senior Juliana Guida, and sophomore Annie Gao finished first in the 200-yard freestyle relay, swimming 1:36.99.
"It has been three weeks of intense training and extremely strong efforts racing each week," said head coach Rob Herb. "We are in a good place and expectations are high."
Lehigh gets a week off before heading back on the road. The Mountain Hawks will travel to South Orange, N.J. on November 7 to face off against Seton Hall.
