Mountain Hawks Drop Pair On Opening Day At Aggie Classic

2/9/2024 11:21:00 PM | Softball

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Lehigh softball team opened its 2024 season Friday with two games at the Aggie Classic at Davis Diamond. The Mountain Hawks took on Tulsa and then No. 24 Texas A&M and while they found themselves in both games early, the opposition used big innings late to claim victories over the Brown and White.

A two-run double by sophomore Sydney Parlett pulled Lehigh even with Tulsa 2-2 after four innings, but the Golden Hurricane scored nine runs in their final two at-bats to claim an 11-2 win in the Mountain Hawks' first game of the day.

RBIs from three Lehigh first-years helped stake the Mountain Hawks to a 4-2 lead after an inning and a half against the Aggies, but Texas A&M answered with four runs in the third and six in the fourth to claim a 12-4, five-inning win.

First-year Peyton Sward led Lehigh with three hits, which came in her first three at-bats of the season. Five Mountain Hawk pitchers allowed 23 hits, including three home runs, over the two games, while walking eight batters.

In Lehigh's season-opening game against Tulsa (2-0), the Golden Hurricane's Maci Cole led off the top of the second inning with a solo home run to left field. Celeste Wood added a sacrifice fly in the fourth to extend Tulsa's lead to 2-0.

Back-to-back singles by graduate student Emily Cimino and senior Brooke Cannon set the table for Lehigh in the fifth. Two batters after Cannon, Parlett laced a double to left center, scoring two to tie the game at 2-2 after four.

Tulsa went back in front with five runs on six hits in the top of the sixth, with an Abby Jones RBI double giving the Golden Hurricane the lead for good. The Golden Hurricane added four more runs in the seventh, taking advantage of two Lehigh errors in the frame.

Jones was one of five Tulsa players to record two hits and led the Golden Hurricane with two RBIs.

Sward had two of Lehigh's six hits against Tulsa.

Sophomore Chloe Hess went the first 5.2 innings in the circle, allowing six runs on ten hits with a walk and two strikeouts before giving way to senior Ansley Dambach.

Texas A&M (2-0) struck for two runs in the home first behind a two-run Jazmine Hill single.

Cannon was hit by a pitch leading off the second before the first-years keyed a two-out, four-run rally. With two on and two out, first-year Holly Lovett singled to left center, scoring Cannon with Lehigh's first run. Sward followed with a single to left to score sophomore Crysta Duenas with the tying run.

Heading back to the top of the order, first-year Gracie Smith made it three straight hits, dunking a single into right field to score Lovett with the go-ahead run. Sward scored when graduate student Josie Charles reached on an error to give Lehigh a 4-2 lead.

Texas A&M used the long ball to take a 6-4 lead after three innings. Julia Cottrill drilled a one-out home run in the third to bring the Aggies within 4-3 and then Allie Enright blasted a three-run shot to right with two outs to give Texas A&M the lead.

The Aggies tacked on six more runs, on five hits and two errors in the fourth before wrapping things up in the top of the fifth. Hill drove in three runs, while Enright went 2-for-3 with four RBIs.

Five Lehigh players had one hit against Texas A&M.

Senior Katelyn Young started in the circle and was charged with 10 runs (nine earned) on six hits in 3.1 innings. Young struck out three and walked six. Junior Maria Urban and first-year Maddy Clark also saw time in the circle against the Aggies.

Texas A&M's victory gives the Aggies the lead in the all-time series for the first time at 4-3. Lehigh had won three of the first four meetings, but Texas A&M has won the last three.

The Mountain Hawks will play two more games Saturday at the Aggie Classic, beginning with a contest against Valparaiso at 10 a.m. CT and followed by a rematch with No. 24 Texas A&M at 3:30 p.m. CT. The Texas A&M game will once again be streamed on SEC Network +.
