The Lehigh men's and women's cross country teams both picked up victories on Saturday morning at the annual Lehigh-Lafayette dual cross country meet. Sophomore Scott Mason earned the individual title on the men's side, helping the team compile a perfect score of 15, and helping the squad to its 17th straight win over the Leopards in the annual meet. Graduate student Shannon Wright captured her first career title in the women's race, as Lehigh placed all 11 of its competitors in the top 12 overall, en route to a 19-44 win.
This marks the third year in a row, and fourth time in the last five years, the Lehigh men have obtained a perfect score of 15 against Lafayette.
Â
"Today was a great day for the team and a historic win in regards to the rivalry," head men's coach Todd Etters said afterwards. "We really ran well as a pack and it was great to see Scott Mason have a breakout performance and pick up the win."
Â
Mason's (26:23.4) victory in the 8K was the first individual title of his career and helped lead the Mountain Hawks to a sweep of the top 11 places in the meet, and 13 of the top 15 overall. On the women's side, Lehigh picked up its 11th consecutive win over Lafayette. Wright won the 6K race with a time of 23:21.8, finishing nearly 13 seconds ahead of Lafayette's Stephanie Benko. From there, spots three-through-twelve all belonged to the Mountain Hawks with senior Arielle Weiner crossing the finish line third in 23:40.1, junior Ashley Strysko placing fourth (23:43.4) and junior Marissa Karl rounding out the top five in 23:48.1.
"It's a much hillier course," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "I thought the women did a good job of working together and packing up through most of the race and competing with Benko, before getting a little separated over the last 1,000 meters."
