Mountain Hawks fall 2-0 at Maryland

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – A pair of goals from Maryland's Mikias Eticha propelled the Terrapins past the Lehigh men's soccer team 2-0 on a rainy Wednesday night at Maryland's Ludwig Field. Lehigh falls to 6-6 with the loss while the Terps improve to 6-5-2.

"We played a really good team today," said head coach Dean Koski. "In the first half we really struggled to get our feet underneath of us and play with the intensity and composure that we needed to. We leveled it off a little bit in the second half, but we still need to do a better job with our decision making and execution."

Neither team tallied a shot until the tenth minute when a pair of Terrapin attempts were blocked by the Lehigh defense. Senior keeper Ciaran Nugent made his first save of the game in the 23rd minute on a shot from the Terps' Alex Shinsky. Maryland controlled possession for much of the half until Eticha gave the Terps a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute. Lehigh picked up momentum in the final few minutes of the half as the Mountain Hawks fired off their first two shots of the game on attempts from junior Jamie Luchini and freshman Doyle Tuvesson. Neither was on frame, however, as Maryland controlled a 1-0 lead at halftime.

The Terps threatened with a trio of corner kicks in the first five minutes of the second half, but the Lehigh defense was able to keep all out of harm's way. Maryland's Eticha struck again in the 72nd minute when he connected on a pass from Jareme Raley to add an insurance goal for the Terps.

The teams traded shots as the clock wound down, including attempts from Tuvesson and sophomore Gianfranco Giammatteo, but none found the back of the net as Maryland grabbed its third-straight win.

Nugent finished with two saves while Maryland keeper Zach Steffan wasn't forced to make any stops. Maryland held a 17-5 shot advantage.

The Mountain Hawks return to Maryland Saturday to face Patriot League foe Loyola at 5 p.m. Free video will be available on the Patriot League Network.
