Drexel deals Mountain Hawks 5-2 setback in season opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Freshman Cassidy Cruz posted wins in both singles and doubles but Lehigh ran into a tough Drexel squad as the Dragons spoiled Lehigh's season opener with a 5-2 Sunday inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Dragons won two doubles matches and added four singles wins to defeat the Mountain Hawks in the first spring match for both teams.
Drexel opened up doubles play with wins at the bottom two flights as Erin Bowsher and Lea Winkler won 6-3 over senior Taylor Hampshire and freshman Jessica Graham at No. 2 and Nicole Pivonka and Fiorella Coria won 6-2 over junior Abby Farrell and freshman Jamie Campisi at the No. 3 flight.
Lehigh did grab a win at No. 1 doubles as Cruz teamed with senior Jenai Bilimoria to defeat Marcela Rosales and Alex Bell.
Cruz posted Lehigh's first point with a 6-2, 6-0 win over Bowsher at No. 3 singles, but Drexel answered with wins at No. 1 singles where Pivonka bested Bilimoria and No. 4 singles where Winkler topped Campisi in a battle of freshmen. Coria recorded Drexel's fourth point with a 6-4, 6-2 win over sophomore Ali Kaminetsky at No. 5 singles.
Farrell delivered Lehigh's second point, winning a lengthy third set super tiebreak 14-12 to defeat Rosales at No. 2 singles. The match at No. 6 singles also came down to a third set tiebreak with Drexel's Bell prevailing over Graham.
The Mountain Hawks will return to action on Sunday February 2 when they host Saint Francis (Pa.) at 2 p.m. inside the Lewis Tennis Center.
