Men's swimming and diving completes day two of PL Championships

ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Lehigh men's swimming and diving team sits in fourth place after two days at the Patriot League Championships. Friday's second day of competition saw junior Alex Aboud break his own school record in the 400 yard individual medley for the first individual school record set by the Lehigh men at this year's championship meet.
 
Aboud broke his own school record in the 400 IM preliminaries, clocking in at 4:00.12. In the finals, Aboud had to settle for seventh place, with a time of 4:02.39, while freshman Danny Bennett, also reached the finals, taking eighth in 4:06.36.
 
Lehigh's other championship finalist was sophomore Kyle Jennings, who placed seventh in the 100 yard butterfly in 49.88. Three other Mountain Hawks: seniors Kevin Shoemaker and Angelo DiGiacinto, and sophomore Chris Hoke reached the B final. DiGiacinto took 11th overall in 50.84 seconds, with Shoemaker finishing 13th in 51.01 and Hoke placing 14th overall in 51.15.
 
Junior Frank Cuzzola captured the B final in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:41.05, while senior Chris Toth finished 13th overall in 1:41.82.
 
Two Mountain Hawk freshmen did well in the 100 yard breaststroke, with Matt Ferguson finishing tenth overall with a time of 57.57 and Jack Lorentzen coming in right behind in 57.79.
 
Lehigh had three consolation finalists in the 100 yard backstroke: freshman Sean Brant, who finished 13th in 52.31, freshman Martin Kendig, who placed 15th in 53.10, and sophomore Matt Chrzanowski, who placed 16th in 53.19.
 
Cuzzola, Bennett, Shoemaker and Toth swam to a fourth place finish in the 800 free relay in a time of 6:46.22, while Brant, Lorentzen, Jennings and Hoke placed fifth in the 200 medley relay in 1:32.61.
 
After qualifying fourth in the preliminaries, senior Connor Styles placed sixth in the finals of the one meter diving event, with a score of 284.85 points. Army placed five divers in the top eight in the one meter dive to leapfrog the Mountain Hawks for third place.
 
Host Navy continues to dominate the field, with a commanding lead over second place Bucknell. Lehigh is 49.5 points behind the Black Knights of Army for third, but the Mountain Hawks lead fifth place American by more than 100 points.
 
The Patriot League Championships conclude Saturday at Navy's Lejeune Hall. Preliminaries are set for 10:30 a.m. with finals slated for a 6 p.m. start.
