Lehigh opens season with pair of dual wins

WORCESTER, Mass. – The Lehigh swimming and diving teams completed a stellar weekend in New England with victories over Providence on Friday and Holy Cross on Saturday. The men's team topped the Friars by a 138-81 count on Friday and defeated the Crusaders, 174-60 on Saturday, while the women earned a 139-80 win on Friday and a 149-89 victory on Saturday.
On Saturday against Holy Cross, the men won every event in a dominant overall performance. In the 200 medley relay, Lehigh held spots one through three, led by the quartet of senior Andrew Dipietro, freshman Chris Hoke, junior Kevin Shoemaker and sophomore Tyler Lareau, which finished in 1:37.98.
In the 1000 freestyle, junior Chris Toth took first with a time of 9:55.76, followed by teammate Will Dearden, who registered a 10:33.8. In the 200 freestyle, Dipietro, Lareau and sophomore Dave Pennenga finished first through third, respectively. Sophomore Frank Cuzzola carried the day in the 50 freestyle with a mark of 22.02, followed by junior Angelo DiGiacinto (22.43) and freshman Matt Chrzanowski (22.70). Shoemaker also registered a first-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 1:59.42.
Other winners were DiGiacinto in the 100 butterfly, Hoke in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke, Dipietro in the 100 backstroke, Toth in the 500 freestyle and the quartet of freshman Connor Cackovic, senior Jon Gorka, sophomore Kyle Jennings and Lareau in the 200 freestyle relay.
On the women's side, the combination of freshman Meredith Bayer, sophomore Emily DiDonato, junior Alena Pollitt and junior Paola Simon took first in the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:53.32. Freshman Giovanna Patafio and junior Alyssa Siano took first and second, respectively, in the 1000 freestyle, while sophomore Katie Haycraft and sophomore Danielle Caruso owned the first two spots in the 200 freestyle. Pollitt earned another top finish in the 50 freestyle and the same was true for DiDonato, who took first in the 200 IM.
In one-meter diving action, freshman Mercy Du took first (169.35) on the women's side and junior Ryan Helfrich placed first on the men's side (242.77). Junior Connor Styles earned first place in the three-meter diving competition with a score of 217.42.
On Friday, the men won all but three events. The tandem of Lareau, junior Jared Blacker, DiGiacinto and Hoke opened up by winning the 200 medley relay, finishing with a time of 1:49.43.
Toth won the 1500 freestyle with a strong finish of 16:42.26, over 40 seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Cuzzola and DiGiacinto placed first and second in the 200 freestyle, with times of 1:59.67 and 2:02.57, respectively. The same was true with the 50 freestyle where Hoke and Chrzanowski were first to finish, posting times of 23.99 and 25.43.
Other winners were Cackovic in the 200 IM (2:18.10), Shoemaker in the 100 butterfly (59.28), Cuzzola in the 100 freestyle (53.11), senior Billy Dunne in the 100 backstroke (1:01.19) and Lareau in the 400 freestyle (4:17.26).
The women were equally as dominant on Friday, also winning all but three events. The quartet of Pollitt, DiDonato, junior Priscilla Barletta and Simon opened with a victory in the 200 medley relay (2:04.74). Lehigh swept the top three in that event.
Patafio won the 1500 freestyle by nearly 24 seconds with a time of 18:06.98. Behind Barletta's first-place finish, the Mountain Hawks also swept the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:11.83.
Other winners were Pollitt in the 50 freestyle (28.26), Bayer in the 200 IM (2:28.25), Barletta in the 100 butterfly (1:05.94), senior Kristen Keenan in the 100 freestyle (1:02.32), Bayer in the 100 backstroke (1:08.24) and Patafio in the 400 freestyle (4:43.20).
In one-meter diving action, Du finished third (174.00) and sophomore Melissa Suggs was fourth (1:45.42) for the women. On the men's side, Styles was second (242.62), Helfrich finished third (219.30) and sophomore Mike Harshman placed sixth (173.25).
Lehigh will be back in action on October 23 when it hosts West Chester at Jacobs Pool at 12:00 p.m.
