ITHACA, N.Y. – Lehigh opened up its fall season as eight Mountain Hawks competed at the Cornell Fall Invitational which took place Friday to Sunday at the Reis Tennis Center. Seven of the eight Lehigh entrants picked up singles wins on the weekend led by sophomore Ryan Krueger, who won two singles matches and also teamed with junior Arnaldo Pacheco to reach the quarterfinals at B doubles.
Of the eight Lehigh entrants, four played in A singles and four played in the B flight. Krueger played in the B flight and won his opening round match when Peter Nawara retired with an injury in a 4-4 first set. The sophomore dropped his second match to Luis Guevera of St. Bonaventure in a ten-point third set tiebreak. After winning the first set 7-5, Krueger lost the second set 6-3 and the tiebreak 10-6. Krueger was relegated to the flight AB consolations where he won his first match 8-2 over Max Segan of Colgate before defaulting to Josh Krieter of Army.
Krueger and Pacheco advanced to the quarterfinals at B doubles when their opponents from Cornell withdrew. The duo was ousted in the quarters by Halvar Dil and Mitch Wong of Stony Brook 8-3.
The Mountain Hawks had four entrants at flight A singles, with three of the four: junior Troy List, sophomore Edgars Rauza and freshman Matt Savran each dropping their opening round match before winning a consolation and losing a second consolation match. Junior Collin Laffey went 0-2 in the A-flight.
Aside from Krueger, Lehigh’s other three entries at flight B singles all went 1-2, losing in the championship bracket before winning a first round consolation. Junior Arnaldo Pacheco and freshmen Matt Fink and Greg Holtzman represented the Brown and White at this flight.
In doubles action, the teams of Savran and Rauza and List and Laffey dropped their matches in the A flight. Freshmen Fink and Holtzman joined Krueger and Pacheco as Lehigh’s doubles team.
