ITHACA, N.Y. – Lehigh opened up its fall season with action at the Cornell Fall Invitational, Friday and Saturday at the Reis Tennis Center. Nine different Mountain Hawks had the opportunity to play competitive matches against opponents from schools including: Cornell, UMBC, Stony Brook, St. Bonaventure and Middlebury. In all, four of Lehigh’s eight singles entrants won a match over the weekend, but all four Mountain Hawk doubles entrants came away empty handed.
The event featured two flights of singles action and two flights of doubles. In the first singles flight, Lehigh was represented by senior Mike Gordon, sophomores Troy List and Collin Laffey and freshman Leland Richardson. All four Lehigh entrants dropped their opening round match, but three of the four rallied to post wins in the consolation bracket.
List, a returning all-league performer, picked up an 8-3 victory over Leo Mochizuki of St. Bonaventure in the second round of consolations. He was knocked out by a player from Stony Brook in the consolation quarterfinals.
Laffey, a transfer from Niagara, suffered a similar fate. He downed Youssef Fassi-Fehri of Stony Brook 8-6 in the consolations, but was beaten in three sets by Chris Post of St. Bonaventure in the consolation quarters.
Richardson has impressed in early intra-squad matches, and bounced back from a round of 16 loss with an 8-6 win over Jeronimo Riefkohl of Middlebury his first consolation match. He then benefitted from a bye in the consolation quarterfinals, but was ousted from the consolation semifinals by John Fife of Cornell, 6-3, 6-2.
In the second singles flight, the Mountain Hawks were represented by senior Jon-Michael Caminiti, junior J.T. Bolcar and sophomores Chris Collins and Cameron Silbert. Collins was the only member of the quartet to pick up a win, and the only Lehigh player all weekend to win a championship bracket match, as he downed Jon Dixon of UMBC 6-4, 6-2. In the round of 16, Collins faced Tyler Reppert from St. Bonaventure and won the first set before Reppert rallied for a 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 victory.
In doubles play, Lehigh teams went a combined 0-4. List and Laffey, and Bolcar and Richardson represented the Mountain Hawks at first doubles, while Caminiti and Collins and Silbert and sophomore Arnaldo Pacheco played at second doubles for the Brown and White.
The Mountain Hawks will continue their fall season next weekend at the Brown Invitational, beginning Friday in Providence, R.I.
