PHILADELPHIA, - Behind a four goal second half outburst, Saint Joseph’s handed the Mountain Hawks their second consecutive loss as the host Hawks downed Lehigh 4-0 Friday evening at Finnesey Field. Sophomore Lauren Mains made a career high nine saves in net for the visitors, but Saint Joseph’s received a goal from Sarah O’Malley in the 53rd minute and added three more in the final six minutes to earn the win. Lehigh falls to 1-3-1 with the setback, while Saint Joseph’s improves to 2-2.
The game’s first 45 minutes saw no scoring, and the visiting Mountain Hawks held the better of the play as they out-shot Saint Joseph’s 9-6 and had the only two corners of the opening half.
O’Malley finally opened up the scoring for the Hawks when she headed in Kortney Rhoades’ corner kick for her first goal of the season.
Lehigh remained in striking distance for the next 31 minutes, but Saint Joseph’s tacked on an insurance goal in the 84th minute when Danielle DeBernardo put home a rebound in front of the net. The Hawks added two more goals in the final two minutes, by Jen Pfeiffer and then Rhoades to account for the four goal margin in a game that was closer than the final score indicated for most of the night.
Saint Joseph’s finished the game with a 16-12 advantage in shots. Lehigh was paced by junior Liz Carlos, who fired five shots including two on goal. Friday’s game also marked the season debut of senior captain Hailey Coonrad, who missed the first four games with an injury.
Cara Critchlow made four saves to earn the shutout for Saint Joseph’s.
The Mountain Hawks will be back on the pitch on Sunday when they wrap up a four match road trip with a game at Cornell. Kickoff is set for 5 p.m. from Charles F. Berman field.
