Lehigh captures second ECAC title

NEWPORT, R.I. – Lehigh players finished first or second in all four singles flights as the Mountain Hawks captured their second ECAC Women’s Open Championship in three years, Sunday afternoon at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The Mountain Hawks earned 12.5 team points, edging second place Connecticut College by four points. Lafayette, New Hampshire and RPI rounded out the field.

 

Juniors Allie Schwartz, Ruthie Furman and Victoria Vityuk all won two matches to take first place in their respective flights. Schwartz defeated Christine Roe of RPI in straight sets in the semifinals at flight B singles, then defeated Lauren Howard of New Hampshire, 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 in the finals.

 

Furman needed three sets to dispatch of Sarah Rice of UNH in the semis, then won 6-3, 0-6, 6-0 over Allie Seranko of Lafayette in the finals at flight C.

 

Vityuk dropped a total of six games, while picking up a pair of straight set wins at flight D singles.

 

Sophomore Julie Arthofer assumed the flight A spot in the Lehigh lineup, and after winning her semifinal match, fell to Olivia Fleszar of New Hampshire 6-2, 6-3 in the finals.

 

In the doubles flight, the top seeded tandem of senior Alexis Jacobi and freshman Kiera Murasko-Blank were upset in the semifinals 8-6 by Kari Barklis and Danielle Coleman of Connecticut College.

 

The Mountain Hawks will continue fall play next month when they host the Lehigh Tennis Inviational on October 14 and 15.
