Mountain Hawks fall to American

Bethlehem, PA - Lehigh was defeated by Amercian 2-1 on Saturday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex in a key Patriot League matchup.  Playing without All-League goal keeper Erin Iwaskiewicz, one would have to think that Lehigh would struggle on the defensive end, but it was the exact opposite, as the Mountain Hawks shut down the potent American offense.  However, Lehigh had trouble itself in trying to score, and the ball just did not seem to bounce the Mountain Hawks way.  The loss drops Lehigh to 7-7 on the year, 1-3 in Patriot League play, and the Eagles go to 7-5-1 and 4-1 in the league.
Lehigh took the early lead when freshman Gina Lewandowski took a beautiful cross pass from junior Jocelyn Helwig and found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.  However, just three minutes later, American came right back and evened the game at one when Anabel Jimenez took a lead pass from Amy Muller and netted her eighth goal of the season.  The game would remain tied for the reaminer of the half as both teams battled feverishly to try and gain the lead.
American was the team that would strike first in the seond half as Lena Wiinkler scored off of a corner, assisted by Simone Konig, and the Eagles were in front.  Lehigh had numerous opportunites throughout the second half to score, but the ball just did not seem to bounce the Mountain Hawks way.  Freshmen Lauren Calabrese and Lewandowski continually applied pressure to the Eagle defense, but one bad hop here and the Mountain Hawks could not seem to catch a break.  Lehigh was out shot on the evening 13-12 by American.
Head Coach Manny Oudin was pleased with the way his team played, particularly Ruth Solomon, who started for the suspended Iwaskiewicz.  “I thought we played well, we played with as much passion and intensity that we’ve shown all year.  We were able to limit their (American) opportunities, they just got the right bounce, were able to take advantage and score and we didn’t.”  Oudin adds, “Ruth did fine out there.  She was a little nervous before the game, she understood that it was a big Patriot League match up, but she should be proud.  She stepped up for us and made some big saves.”
Lehigh will return to action on Wednesday when the Mountain Hawks welcome Delaware State into the Ulrich Sports Complex.  Game time is slated for 7:00 and the match can be heard live on Lehigh’s website.
