West Point, NY – Lehigh freshmen Lauren Fornuto and Gina Lewandowski scored goals less than five minutes apart in the second half, but it wasn’t enough as the Mountain Hawks dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Army in double overtime at Clinton Field Tuesday night. The loss drops Lehigh’s record to 5-3 overall (1-1 Patriot League), while the Black Knights improve to 7-2 on the season, and 2-0 in league play.

Army built a two-goal lead in the first half, and things looked as though the defending league champions might cruise to victory. Tina Connors gave the Black Knights a one-goal advantage just 1:55 into the contest, and Army extended to a 2-0 lead when Sarah Domme scored off a corner kick in the final moments of the first half.

However, as usual, the gritty Lehigh team refused to give in. The Mountain Hawks got on the board in the 67th minute when freshman Lauren Fornuto scored her first collegiate goal from outside the box. Exactly four minutes later, Lehigh drew even as Gina Lewandowski scored her team best fifth goal of the season off a pass from Meghan Duesing to tie the match at 2.
Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first overtime period, though Lehigh came close. Senior Adrienne Grunwald hit the crossbar from inside the box in the final minute of the period, sending the contest to a second sudden-victory frame.

In the second OT, Army settled the decision fairly quickly, as Jen Pascucci hit the back of the net just 1:28 into the period to lift the Black Knights to the victory.
Lehigh returns to action Friday, as the Mountain Hawks take on St. Joseph’s in Philadelphia. Game time is scheduled for 3:00.
