Cimino's Walk-Off Double Pushes Lehigh Past Army, 4-3

4/21/2023 8:08:00 PM | Softball

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Senior Emily Cimino delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Lehigh softball team to a 4-3 victory over Army West Point Friday at Leadership Park. Cimino pushed Lehigh back in front after the visiting Black Knights scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to take the lead.

Friday's victory lifts the Mountain Hawks to 10-0 in Patriot League play and 32-10 overall.

Graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich and senior Josie Charles both went 3-for-4 at the top of Lehigh's lineup as Lehigh out-hit Army 13-6.

First-year Chloe Hess started in the circle for Lehigh and navigated her way through jams in each of the first two innings.

Army West Point (17-27, 9-3 PL) pushed a run across in the top of the third inning on a Maddie Wilkes sacrifice fly, but Lehigh answered with two runs as par of a two-out rally in the bottom of the frame.

In the home third, junior Brooke Cannon singled to right to push first-year Lily Owens to third base. Sophomore Rory Dudley tied the game with a single to center to score Owens and then first-year Sydney Parlett lined the next pitch into center field to score Cannon to give Lehigh a 2-1 lead.

Hess worked through some early control issues to retire nine of the 10 batters she faced in the fourth through sixth innings as Lehigh maintained its 2-1 lead.

Army's Brook Mitchell singled with one out in the seventh and scored the tying run on a double to right center by Angelina Bebek. Taylor Brown reached on an infield single to put runners at the corners.

Lehigh head coach Fran Troyan went to junior Katelyn Young in the circle and Army's Kayla Edwards hit a sacrifice fly to right to plate Bebek with the go-ahead run. Young retired the next batter to keep Lehigh within 3-2 going to the last of the seventh.

In the home seventh, Lehigh loaded the bases on three consecutive singles by sophomore Lindsey Martin, Barjaktarovich and Charles, before Cimino drilled an 0-1 pitch to deep left center, with Martin and Barjaktarovich scoring the tying and winning runs. The double was Cimino's 14th of the season and delivered RBIs 36 and 37.

Young earned the win with her two-thirds of an inning of relief. Hess allowed three runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work. She walked five and struck out seven.

Breanna Izzo went the distance in the circle for Army and took the loss. Edwards went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Black Knights.

Lehigh and Army West Point will close out the weekend series with a Saturday doubleheader. The start time for the twin bill has been moved up to 11 a.m. with both games set to be broadcast on ESPN+.
