Strong final round lifts Lehigh to second place finish at Wildcat Invitational

MALVERN, Pa. – The Lehigh men's golf team began the day in tenth place at the Wildcat Invitational but a strong final round lifted the Mountain Hawks into second place in a 21 team field as the tournament concluded Tuesday with the final 18 holes at White Manor Country Club. The Mountain Hawks shot 14 over par 296, the second lowest round of the day and the third lowest of the tournament to move into second place with a final score of 599 (303-296).
 
Lehigh finished six strokes behind team champion Cleveland State (302-291-593) and one ahead of 18 hole leader Wagner, which dropped to third place. The Mountain Hawks were one of four Patriot League teams in the field and bested Bucknell and Colgate by six strokes and Lafayette by 21 shots.
 
Freshman Johnny Hsu was Lehigh's top finisher, tying for 11th place at six over par 148 after back-to-back rounds of 74. Hsu birdied two of his final four holes to finish with the second round 74 on Tuesday.
 
Another freshman turned in Lehigh's lowest score of the tournament as Eamon Marone shot even par 71 on Tuesday to move into a tie for 25th place at 151 (80-71). Marone matched five birdies with five bogeys and birdied both 17 and 18 to get back to even par for the day. His 71 matched the low round of the day for the tournament.
 
Defending medalist Billy Johns and senior Dave Olexson both tied for 37th place at 102. Johns shot 77 on Tuesday while Olexson finished with a 74.
 
Rounding out Lehigh's scoring contingent was freshman Max Redetzke, who tied for 102nd place at 164 after following a 76 on Monday with an 88 on Tuesday.
 
Freshman Lee Hammerschmidt competed as an individual for Lehigh and finished strong with a 77 to finish in 83rd place at 159 (82-77).
 
Binghamton's Kyle Wambold was the individual medalist at one over par 143 (69-74). Wambold posted a two stroke victory over Andrew MacMillan from host Villanova.
 
Lehigh has now finished second in its last three tournaments dating back to the fall, with fields of 12, four and now 21 teams.
 
The Mountain Hawks will return to action at the Coca-Cola Bottling Company of the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Invitational hosted by Lafayette April 3-4 at Silver Creek Country Club in Hellertown, Pa.
