The Lehigh women’s tennis team was picked fourth in the Patriot League preseason poll, announced Friday. The Mountain Hawks earned 42 points in the poll, which ties Lehigh with Navy for fourth in the poll, which is voted on by the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Lehigh is off to a 1-6 start in 2010 but has reached the semifinals of the last six Patriot League tournaments.

In a match that came down to No. 6 singles, Lehigh fell to Towson 4-3 in its final match before a long layoff Tuesday at the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks won the doubles point, and picked up singles wins from senior Julie Arthofer and freshman Patricia Muething, but the Tigers’ Beth Daub came back from a set down to defeat sophomore Izzy Breit at No. 6 singles to give the visitors the win. Lehigh falls to 1-6 with the loss while Towson nabs its first spring win.

One day after picking up its first win of the spring season, Lehigh could not carry the momentum over to its next match as the Mountain Hawks fell 6-1 to Drexel Sunday at the Lewis Tennis Center. Senior Stacey Reich won a three set match over Sonja Stosic at third singles to account for Lehigh’s only point as the Mountain Hawks fall to 1-5 on the season.

It took five tries but the Lehigh women’s tennis team finally netted its first win of the spring season as the Mountain Hawks downed Marist 5-2 Saturday at the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks won the doubles point and added wins in the bottom four singles flight as four players picked up their first singles wins of the spring season. Lehigh improves to 1-4 with the victory.

Lehigh will once again try for its first win of the spring season this weekend as the Mountain Hawks will host a pair of matches at the Lewis Tennis Center. On Saturday, the Mountain Hawks will host the Red Foxes of Marist, while on Sunday Lehigh will host Drexel as the Brown and White continue their season-opening eight match home stand and look to stop their four-match slide.
