Four Mountain Hawks were named to the 2009 Patriot League Academic Honor Roll led by senior Will Robinson’s 3.82 grade point average, it was announced on Wednesday.  To be eligible for the honor roll, a student-athlete must obtain a GPA of 3.2 or better and earn a varsity letter in his or her sport.

Sophomore Duncan Zeiders and senior captain Shane Gilroy earned spots on the 2009 All-Patriot League Second-Team as Zeiders shot a 224 (73, 73, 78) and Gilroy totaled a 226 (78, 73, 75) as Lehigh wrapped up competition at the Patriot League Championship on Sunday at the West Point Golf Course.  Lehigh shot an 899 as a team (296, 299, 304) and placed fourth in the team standings, while Bucknell won the team championship with a score of 884 (295, 297, 292).  Navy finished second in the team standings with an 889 (287, 302, 300) and the Midshipmen were followed by Army (286, 302, 303 = 891), Lehigh, Lafayette (299, 304, 308 = 911), Colgate (310, 310, 303 = 923) and Holy Cross (316, 314, 322 = 952).

Lehigh opened play at the 2009 Patriot League Championship on Saturday and after 36 holes at the West Point Golf Course the Mountain Hawks are in fourth place with a score of 595.  Sophomore Duncan Zeiders is in sixth place individually after shooting a 146 (72, 73) and all six Mountain Hawk competitors are currently in the top-20.  Army leads the team standings as the Black Knights shot a 588 (286, 302) and lead rival Navy by one stroke after the Midshipmen shot a 589 (287, 302).  Bucknell sits in third (295, 297 = 592), followed by the Mountain Hawks, Lafayette (299, 304 = 603), Colgate (310, 310 = 620) and Holy Cross (316, 314 = 630).

Lehigh tuned up for this weekend’s Patriot League Championship with a first place finish at the 2009 Lehigh Valley Cup on Wednesday afternoon at Lehigh Country Club.  The Mountain Hawks shot a 383 to defeat archrival Lafayette (388), along with local foes Muhlenberg (389) and Moravian (392).  Freshman Doug Marcincin led the Brown and White as he placed second overall with a score of 72.  Moravian’s Lucas Smith captured individual honors after shooting a 71.

The responsibilities of a team captain require unparalleled feats of leadership and commitment. So much so that it is difficult to imagine how any golf captain could also take on the responsibility of writing an entire curriculum to improve the way health care is organized and delivered at a local hospital.  However, watching Will Robinson, a senior captain of the Lehigh men’s golf team, scribble explanatory pictures about heath care systems and move about as he gives a compelling explanation of his curriculum for the residency program at St. Luke’s Hospital, it is apparent that a deep passion is driving him—a passion that has also characterized his successful athletic career at Lehigh.
