The Patriot League announced its 2009 men’s basketball Academic Honor Roll on Monday. Led by junior Marquis Hall, the 2009 Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s basketball, Lehigh placed four student-athletes on the honor roll. To be eligible for the honor roll a student-athlete must obtain a 3.2 grade point average and be a warded a varsity letter. A total of 23 men’s basketball student-athletes were named to the honor roll.

Murray H. Goodman ’48 Head Coach Brett Reed has announced the addition of Antoni Wyche to the Mountain Hawks coaching staff for the 2009-10 season.  A 1999 graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Wyche brings a wealth of professional playing experience to the Lehigh sidelines, having played in numerous pro leagues in the United States and overseas the last nine years.  “I am really excited to be joining the Lehigh staff and hope my previous playing and life experiences will enable me to help the team build upon its previous success going forward,” Wyche explained.

Seven Lehigh student-athletes were recently recognized as recipients of the 2009 Arthur Ashe, Jr. Sports Scholar Award.  The seven winners included Marquis Hall (men’s basketball), Anne Rodriguez (women’s swimming), Jillian Randolph (women’s track and field), Quadir Carter (football), Evans Kosgei (men’s track and field), Roxy Jahangeri (women’s soccer) and Shannon Alejandro (women’s track and field).  Hall, Rodriguez and Randolph were First-Team selections, while Carter and Kosgei earned Second-Team recognition, Jahangeri earned a spot on the Third-Team, and Alejandro was an Honorable Mention selection.  The seven selections are the most Lehigh has ever had.

Former Lehigh hoopsters Joe Knight ’06 and Jose Olivero ’07 continue to make headlines on the hardwood as the pair of Mountain Hawks alumni shined this past season in their respective pro leagues.  Knight, who plays for Pertevniyal in Turkey, was named the TB2L (Turkish Second Basketball League) Import Player of the Year, while Olivero, a member of Le Portel in France, ranked eighth in the Pro B League in scoring at 17.1 points per game.

A pair of former Lehigh greats have been inducted into the Roger S. Penske/Lehigh Athletics Hall of Fame.  Formal induction took place on Lehigh’s Packer Campus on Saturday, May 9, 2009.  Track and field standout Justina Barone ’03, who holds 20 school records, and Charlie Brown ’77, Lehigh’s all-time leading scorer in men’s basketball at the time of his graduation, comprise the class of 2009.
