3/17/2023 8:43:00 PM | Softball
TAMPA, Fla. – The Lehigh softball game split its two games Friday on day one of the South Florida Showdown at the USF Softball Stadium. The Mountain Hawks opened the day with a 3-1 win over Iowa, Lehigh's second win over the Hawkeyes in the last week, and then dropped a back-and-forth 8-7 decision in eight innings to host USF.
Â
Friday's split leaves the Mountain Hawks at 17-4 on the season.
Â
Junior Brooke Cannon provided the offense against Iowa with a two-run, inside-the-park home run and also put Lehigh ahead of USF with a successful squeeze bunt in the seventh inning. Sophomore Rory Dudley also had a big game against the Bulls with two home runs and five RBIs.
Â
Lehigh and Iowa both had four hits in the Mountain Hawks' first game Friday, with the brown and white also capitalizing on two Iowa errors.
Â
Cannon's two-run home run gave Lehigh a 2-0 lead after two innings. Lehigh added a third run in the fourth inning as senior Josie Charles scored when Cannon reached on an error.
Â
Junior Katelyn Young kept Iowa off the board through the first six innings. Iowa scored its run on an RBI ground out in the seventh. The Hawkeyes had the tying runs in scoring position but Young got Avery Jackson to pop out to shortstop to end the game.
Â
Young picked up her ninth win of the season, allowing an unearned run on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Cannon, Charles, Carley Barjaktarovich and Amanda Greaney recorded hits against Iowa (17-10).
Â
Dudley opened the scoring against USF with a two-run home run to left center in the top of the third inning, but the Bulls answered with four runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 4-2 lead.
Â
Alyssa Rano's two-run single in the fourth extended USF's lead to 6-2.
Â
Dudley struck again in the fifth, this time with a three-run blast to left to bring the Mountain Hawks within a run at 6-5. Young came out of the bullpen to keep Lehigh within one heading into the seventh.
Â
Senior Emily Cimino led off the seventh with a triple to center field and slid home with the tying run on a fielder's choice ground ball by Greaney.
Â
Cannon then followed with the go-ahead RBI fielder's choice bunt, scoring Charles to put Lehigh up 7-6.
Â
Rano led off the home seventh with a single and moved to third on a pair of ground outs. With two outs, Marissa Trivelpiece doubled to right center scoring Rano with the tying run.
Â
With the international tiebreaker in effect, Lehigh ended up with runners on second and third and nobody out in the top of the eighth, but could not push a run across. The winning run was sacrificed to third, and Kathy Garcia-Soto singled up the middle to win the game for the Bulls.
Â
Young (9-2) took the loss allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits in 3.1 innings of relief. First-year Chloe Hess started and allowed four runs on four hits. Sophomore Maria Urban was charged with two runs on two hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Â
Charles went 3-for-3 against the Bulls, while Dudley and sophomore Maddy Schmeiser both added two hits.
Â
Trivelpiece led USF (17-13), going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Jaden Martinez threw the first 4.1 innings for USF, allowing five runs. Payton Dixon earned the victory in relief.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will continue action at the South Florida Showdown on Saturday when they face Marist at 9 a.m. and No. 9/11 Texas at 2 p.m.
