Lehigh Tops Iona, Princeton to Extend Winning Streak to 10

3/12/2023 3:03:00 PM | Softball

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Lehigh softball team extended its winning streak to 10 games with two more wins Sunday at The Spring Games. The Mountain Hawks overcame an early 2-0 deficit to defeat Iona 5-2 and then scored the game's first five runs in a 5-3 victory over Princeton.

Senior Emily Cimino went 5-for-7 at the plate and homered in both games to lead the Mountain Hawks, who are now 14-2 on the season.

After three and a half scoreless innings, Iona (4-10) went in front with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jamie Sheeran hit a one-out home run and then Emma Capuano reached on an error before eventually coming in to score on a wild pitch.

Lehigh tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth when graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich poked a bases-loaded double down the left field line, scoring two.

Cimino led off the sixth with a inside-the-park home run to put the Mountain Hawks in front 3-2.

First-year Lily Owens and sophomore Rory Dudley added RBI hits in the seventh inning. The Mountain Hawks finished with 11 hits off of three Iona pitchers.

Sophomore Chloe Hess entered with one out in the fourth inning and earned the victory in relief with 3.2 innings of scoreless work. She allowed three hits and struck out five with no walks.

Cimino was 3-for-3 against Princeton and opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning.

Lehigh extended its lead to 4-0 in the top of the second as first-year Sydney Parlett doubled home senior Josie Charles and then first-year Abbey Tabaka followed with a single to score Parlett.

The Mountain Hawks added a fifth run when Cimino came home from third base on a double steal attempt in the third inning.

Princeton pulled two runs back in the home third on a Serena Starks home run and an Adrienne Chang RBI double.

Starks scored Princeton's third run in the fifth inning following a Lehigh throwing error. The Mountain Hawks turned a pair of double plays to get out of trouble in the fifth and sixth innings.

Junior Katelyn Young threw the first four innings, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts. Hess came on to throw the final three innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits with a strikeout.

The Mountain Hawks will be off Monday and will return to action on Tuesday with a single game against Iona slated for 9 a.m.
