3/11/2023 4:26:00 PM | Softball

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – Lehigh opened its spring break trip to Florida with a pair of wins Saturday in its first day at The Spring Games. The Mountain Hawks erased an early 1-0 lead with three runs to defeat South Alabama 3-1 and then built a 7-0 lead on the way to a 7-1 win over Iowa.

Graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich, senior Josie Charles and junior Brooke Cannon all enjoyed four-hit days to pace the Mountain Hawks, who have won eight consecutive games and are now 12-2 on the season.

South Alabama (14-9) struck first against Lehigh and junior Katelyn Young as Odalys Cordova led off the third inning with a home run to left field.

Lehigh answered back with two runs in the fourth inning to take the lead. Sophomore Rory Dudley led off the frame with a double and scored the tying run on a single by Charles. Junior Amanda Greaney brought home Cannon with a sacrifice fly to give the Mountain Hawks the lead after four.

First-year Lily Owens led off the fifth inning with a home run to left, her third of the season, to put Lehigh up 3-1.

Young improved to 6-0 in the circle, allowing a run on three hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Lehigh had three hits against South Alabama, with Cannon going 3-for-3.

Against Iowa (13-9), Lehigh scored in four consecutive innings to build a 7-0 lead over the Hawkeyes. The Mountain Hawks also took advantage of four Iowa errors.

First-year Abbey Tabaka opened a three-run second inning with an RBI single scoring Cannon. Sophomore Maddy Schmeiser reached on an error allowing Greaney to score, and Barjaktarovich followed with an RBI single, plating Tabaka to put Lehigh up 3-0 after two innings.

Charles brought Dudley home with a single to shortstop in the third inning and the Mountain Hawks added two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth all directly off of Iowa errors.

Barjaktarovich, Dudley, Charles and Tabaka all had two hit games against the Hawkeyes. All three of Dudley's hits on Saturday were doubles.

Iowa scored its only run on Denali Loecker's RBI single in the sixth.

First-year Chloe Hess picked up her fifth victory of the season, allowing a run on six hits with five strikeouts.

The Mountain Hawks will continue action at The Spring Games on Sunday when they will face Iona at 9 a.m. and Princeton at 11:30 a.m. Both games will be streamed on FloSoftball.
