HAMPTON, Va. – The Lehigh softball team received a pair of strong pitching performances from junior Katelyn Young and first-year Chloe Hess Saturday on day one of the HU/NSU Tour Classic. Â
Hess was outdeuled by Sydney Horan as Quinnipiac dealt Lehigh its first loss of the season, 1-0 in the opener.
Â
Saturday's split leaves Lehigh at 4-1 on the young season.

Lehigh bounced back in the afternoon to top UMass Lowell (1-5). First-year Lily Owens drew a one-out walk in the home first, stole second, and then scored on a single up the middle by senior Emily Cimino. Two batters later, Cimino came home on a double by sophomore Rory Dudley to put the Mountain Hawks up 2-0 after one.
Â
The River Hawks cut Lehigh's lead to one in the third when a leadoff double came around to score on a throwing error, but the Mountain Hawks added on with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Â
Cimino scored on a wild pitch in the fourth after being hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and doubled home graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich in the fifth. First-year Abbey Tabaka singled home Dudley in the sixth to put Lehigh up 5-1.
Â
Young picked up her second win of the season, allowing an unearned run on two hits with 12 strikeouts and just one walk.
