Pitching Powers Lehigh to Split Saturday at HU/NSU Tour Classic

2/18/2023 7:50:00 PM | Softball

HAMPTON, Va. – The Lehigh softball team received a pair of strong pitching performances from junior Katelyn Young and first-year Chloe Hess Saturday on day one of the HU/NSU Tour Classic. Hess allowed one run on three hits with nine strikeouts in Lehigh's first game of the day against Quinnipiac, while Young struck out a career-high 12, while allowing just two hits in a 5-1 victory over UMass Lowell in the Mountain Hawks' second game.

Hess was outdeuled by Sydney Horan as Quinnipiac dealt Lehigh its first loss of the season, 1-0 in the opener.

Saturday's split leaves Lehigh at 4-1 on the young season.

Quinnipiac (1-0) capitalized in a leadoff walk in the bottom of the first inning and then recorded two of its three hits, with Amanda Engel's RBI single bringing home the only run of the game.

Horan limited Lehigh to just two hits, a two-out single by junior Amanda Greaney in the second, and a leadoff double by senior Josie Charles in the third, while striking out seven and walking one.

Hess struck out nine and walked one, while allowing a run on three hits.

Lehigh bounced back in the afternoon to top UMass Lowell (1-5). First-year Lily Owens drew a one-out walk in the home first, stole second, and then scored on a single up the middle by senior Emily Cimino. Two batters later, Cimino came home on a double by sophomore Rory Dudley to put the Mountain Hawks up 2-0 after one.

The River Hawks cut Lehigh's lead to one in the third when a leadoff double came around to score on a throwing error, but the Mountain Hawks added on with single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Cimino scored on a wild pitch in the fourth after being hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and doubled home graduate student Carley Barjaktarovich in the fifth. First-year Abbey Tabaka singled home Dudley in the sixth to put Lehigh up 5-1.

Young picked up her second win of the season, allowing an unearned run on two hits with 12 strikeouts and just one walk.

The Mountain Hawks will head to Norfolk on Sunday to wrap-up the HU/NSU Tour Classic. Lehigh will face Wagner at 10 a.m. and Georgetown at 12:30 p.m. on Norfolk State's home field.
