BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh softball team will close out the regular season this weekend when the Mountain Hawks host Holy Cross for three games at Leadership Park. The series will kick off with a doubleheader on Saturday with a noon first pitch on Alumnae Day and wrap up with a noon game Sunday on Senior Day.
The Mountain Hawks (20-23-1, 9-6 Patriot League) have won three straight games and are unbeaten in seven of their last eight. Lehigh started its final week of the regular season with a doubleheader sweep over Rider on Wednesday. In game one, sophomore pitcher Parker Boyd hurled with her third shutout in less than a week. It was her second one-hitter in a span of the five days. Boyd struck out six and only surrendered a single in the top of the fourth inning. Offensively, Lehigh got a pair of RBI singles from junior Brie Gerhardt and senior Katie Schultz in a 2-0 victory.
In game two, the Lehigh offense came alive with nine runs on 12 hits. After falling behind 2-0 early, the Mountain Hawks scored nine unanswered runs to cruise to a 9-2 win. Senior Rachel Timberman and junior Ashley Rabago each had two hits, with Rabago driving in Lehigh's first three runs to give the Mountain Hawks the lead.
With four hits in Wednesday's twin bill, Timberman has taken over the team lead in batting average at .310. Senior Nicole Yozzo (37) and Rabago (21) rank 1-2 in the Patriot League in stolen bases. Yozzo needs one more stolen base to reach 100 for her career.
Schultz has been Lehigh's top hitter since the start of Patriot League play, with a .379 average and eight RBIs in the Mountain Hawks' last 25 games.
Boyd has gone 13-3 with a 1.79 ERA over Lehigh's last 25 games and owns a 16-11 record and 2.71 ERA overall. Junior Emily Sorem earned her fourth win of the season in game two against Rider. Three of her four wins, including both of her shutouts have come in her five starts at Leadership Park.
Holy Cross enters the final weekend of the season with an 11-30 record and a 4-11 mark in the league. The Crusaders hold a very slim chance to get into the Patriot League Tournament. Holy Cross trails fourth place Army by three games and would need to sweep Lehigh, have Lafayette sweep Army and have Boston University sweep Colgate to sneak in as the No. 4 seed based on the Crusaders owning the tiebreaker with Army.
The Crusaders will host Bryant in a single game Thursday before traveling to Lehigh.
Jackie Brewster is Holy Cross' top hitter a she ranks third in the league in batting average (.357) and first in on-base percentage (.453). Sydney Behrens isn't far behind as she ranks eighth in the league in average at .319. In the circle, Katy Watson has posted a 3.79 ERA with eight complete games and two shutouts.
Lehigh has dominated the all-time series with an 85-19 record against the Crusaders. The Mountain Hawks went 4-0 against Holy Cross last season, including a three-game sweep in the regular season and a 9-1 win in the opening game of the Patriot League Tournament.
All three games of the Holy Cross series will be broadcast on the Patriot League Network.
The Patriot League Tournament begins Thursday, May 10 on the home field of the highest seed. Boston University needs just one win against Colgate to wrap up the regular season title. It will mark just the third time, and first since 2011, that the Patriot League Tournament will not be held in the Lehigh Valley. Lehigh has hosted now all but three Patriot League Tournaments since they moved to campus sites in 2002.
