
Mountain Hawks in the mix after day one of Patriot League Championship

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Seven strokes separate the top five teams after the first 36 holes at the Patriot League Championship were completed Saturday on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. Five teams broke the 300 mark in Saturday's morning round, but in the afternoon the winds strengthened and late afternoon rains raised scores with just one team carding a sub-300 round.

Lehigh finds itself right in the mix after day one as the Mountain Hawks sit in third place in the eight team field at 23 over par 599. The Mountain Hawks' opening round 295 tied for second best, while their second round 304 ranked third.

Loyola holds the 36-hole team lead at 596 (296-300), while Navy sits in second place at 598 (290-308). Army West Point is fourth at 601 (305-296) and Bucknell is fifth at 603 (296-307). Add in sixth place Colgate at 606 and there are six teams within 10 strokes of the lead.

Sophomore Ryan Kelly was Lehigh's top player on day one as he completed 36 holes in second place at two over par 146. Kelly made four birdies in an opening round 72 then shot 74 in the afternoon, the second lowest round of the afternoon session, with 16 pars and two bogeys.

The 2017 Rookie of the Year, Kelly will play in the final group Sunday with Navy's Charlie Musto and Loyola's Ethan Wall. Musto holds the 36-hole individual lead at even par 144, shooting 69 in the morning and 75 in the afternoon. Wall and Lafayette's Trey Croney are tied for third at 148.

Three Mountain Hawks enter the final day tied for 14th place at seven over par 151. Senior Billy Johns shot 76 in round one and 40 on the front nine of round two, but battled back on the back nine, carding three birdies to shoot 35 on the back and get back into the mix with a 75. Johns leads Lehigh with seven birdies in the championship.

Sophomore Owen Quinn opened with a 74 and added a 77 in the afternoon with two birdies in each round. Junior Johnny Hsu delivered a strong opening round 73 and shot 78 in the second round.

Juniors Eamon Marone and Max Redetzke are tied for 38th place at 160. Marone rebounded from a first round 81 to shoot 79 in the afternoon, while Redetzke carded three birdies in a first round 77 and shot 83 in round two.

The Patriot League Championship concludes Sunday with the final 18 holes on the Grace Course at Saucon Valley Country Club. Lehigh will be paired with Loyola and Navy and will tee off from the first hole beginning at 9 a.m.
