BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Following a stellar start to the season, Lehigh men's lacrosse junior Andrew Pettit has been named an assistant captain, as announced on Wednesday. Pettit joins captain Ian Strain and assistants Craig Chick, John Mehok and Nolan Apers who were all named as captains in the fall. Through eight games, Pettit leads the Mountain Hawks and is among the national leaders in goals (22) and points (35). His 13 assists are tied for the team lead.
Â
"I am thrilled to announce Andrew as an assistant captain," said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. "He has emerged as the key vocal leader on the offensive end and has competed with consistent grit and high energy throughout the first half of the season. He has consistently been acting as a captain without the 'C' on his chest, so in many way,s this is just a formality and a validation of the outstanding work he has already been doing with great success as a leader and mentor for his teammates."
Â
Pettit has been a consistent force, recording multiple goals in 20 of his last 23 games dating back to his freshman season. He has four hat tricks this season while also dishing a career-high five points vs. Holy Cross. Pettit's 13 assists this season are already a career high. Pettit scored five goals in a big win at No. 12 Army West Point to earn Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors. He scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter to turn a one-goal deficit into a two-goal lead, on the way to the 9-7 win.
Â
Pettit and No. 12/14 Lehigh return to action on Wednesday at No. 18/19 Hofstra. Following Tuesday's game, the Mountain Hawks return home on Saturday to host Navy at 3 p.m.
